Weds Jive 11-1-17

Good evening, it's Wednesday November 1st.  This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In New Haven tonight/Wednesday, Café Nine presents The Woggles, appearing with Jeremy & The Harlequins, and Stupidity. On Thursday it’s J.J. Thames & The Violet Revolt, and Black Snake Boots. Friday’s Happy Hour features Frank Critelli, and the bill for the late show includes Jonwayne, Danny Watts, Ceschi, and more. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and it’s a Black Noise Scam Reunion show later with Savage World and Cry Havoc. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Beekeepers and Robert C. Fullerton, followed by a late show with The Wild One and a Forever: Tom Petty Tribute Night.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. It’s dirty punk reggae on Friday with Danny Pease and the Regulators, and on Saturday Poppa Chubby is back in town. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven on Thursday they headline Krewella, appearing with Sigma and Ragepak. The spotlight is on Kranium on Friday, and Sunday’s show has Dirty Heads, The Unlikely Candidates, and Tyrone’s Jacket.  www.toadsplace.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts a faculty panel discussion this evening/Wednesday at Ring Performing Arts Hall in conjunction with the Davison Art Center exhibition Sasha Rudensky: Acts and Illusions. This evening/Wednesday, music legend Rick Berlin presents a talk about his book, “The Paragraphs.” At The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown. Thursday, Matthew Chaves talks about his book “Signs of Hope: Messages from Subway Therapy.” At Wesleyan RJ Julis Bookstore. Wesleyan alumna and racism scholar, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum returns to the bookstore on Friday with her new book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown, tonight/Wednesday, the Classic Mystery Book Discussion group explores “The Bishop Murder Case.” You can join an Author Talk on Thursday with Edward A Hagan, who presents “To Vietnam in Vain: Memoir of an Irish-American Intelligence Advisor 1969-1970.” Writers working on National Novel Writing Month are invited to stop in on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm to share their work. Thursday, brings Bob Gotta’s long standing monthly Acoustic Open Mic to The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts their Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Kyla. It’s empowering yoga on Tuesday afternoon. On Friday night it’s a special Tellabration with the Story City Troup. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and you can enjoy blues, jugband, rockabilly mix , and more Saturday evening with Washboard Slim & The Bluelights. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, and “Walk With Me,” a documentary about Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hahn, through Thursday. Tonight/Wednesday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Kedi,” a film about Istanbul street cats. From 11 -midnight it's Bitchin’. WESU's feminist radio hour packed with reporting on world events, conversations about resistance, personal narratives and eclectic music by women and queer artists

From 1 - 2 am it's Kellex and Kleenog’s Radio Hour.
