Friday 11-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Friday November 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a bit of what's happening in our area this week:

Tonight, at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown it’s a rock fusion with Someone You Can Xray, alongside the roots music of Brian May. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening, you can enjoy acoustic folk with Seat of our Pants. On Sunday, John Basinger performs book nine of Paradise Lost, followed by a reception for the November photography art exhibition, Nature’s Wonders. The Hearing Voices Network meets Mondays at 10:30 am. www.buttonwood.org


At the Russell Library in Middletown, tomorrow/Saturday, writers can share their work for National Novel Writing Month from 10 am to 2 pm, and the Authors 06457 series presents Gloria Perry and Treamell Lawrence with their latest books. In New Haven at Café Nine right about now thier Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte with DW Ditty, and the later tonight José Oyola & The Astronauts, Hnry Flwer, UZOO, and Klokwize share a bill. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and José Oyola returns in the to Cafe Nine tomorrow evening, along with Salt Cathedral, Tall Juan, and Ani Cordero. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Rob Lytle, Anne Castellano, Shesaidhesaid, and Dogbite, and they round out the weekend with Deke Dickerson and Nathaniel Hintz taking the stage Sunday night. http://www.cafenine.com/

Tonight, Infinity Hall Hartford presents Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Saturday, it’s blues and funks with The Subdudes. Saturday and Sunday The Vintage Players will premiere a brand new show by Carolyn Kirsch at Oddfellows playhouse in Middeltown. “So Bea it” is described as a quirky comedy with a heart of Gold and it stars Billy Johnstone, host of WESU’s own Broadway radio hour! Saturday evening here in Middletown, join WESU for Dinner and a show at our First Annual Free Form Feast and Festival, featuring over a dozen acts and an Italian buffet dinner – From Jazz and Americana to classical, word music, circus arts, comedy and more… there’s something for everyone. Our full lineup includes Old Lonesome Dave, Joe Flood, Noah Baerman, Bob Nasta, Frank Critelli, The Basukes, Slavei (sounds like slah-vay), Babe and Beth, Art Farm, Gag Reflex, Dana Merritt, Kelvin Young & Olivia Backal-Balik. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, and “Jane,” a documentary about conservationist Jane Goodall. Tonight REAL Art Ways opens

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth expounding on that Wesleyan music scene.

And from 6:30-7pm catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood. 

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T- offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.   
                                                       
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N following the premise that every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30pm until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

Staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
