Thursday 11-02-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday November 2nd.  This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts Fall Senior Thesis Dance Concerts beginning tonight, Thursday and continuing through Saturday. Full details at www.wesleyan.edu.cfa/

This evening/Thursday, at The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown Matthew Chaves talks about his book “Signs of Hope: Messages from Subway Therapy.”. Wesleyan alumna and racism scholar, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum returns to the bookstore on Friday with her new book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?”www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown, tonight you can join an Author Talk on Thursday with Edward A Hagan, who presents “To Vietnam in Vain: Memoir of an Irish-American Intelligence Advisor 1969-1970.” Writers working on National Novel Writing Month are invited to stop in on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm to share their work. There’s another author talk on Sunday when Craig Grossi presents “Craig and Fred.” Enjoy their ongoing exhibit, Over the Top: Liberty and Victory Bond Posters from WWI, through the month.  www.russelllibrary.org

Tonight also brings Bob Gotta’s long standing monthly Acoustic Open Mic to The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown. Friday night it’s a special Tellabration with the Story City Troup at The Buttonwood Tree. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and you can enjoy blues, jugband, rockabilly  and more Saturday evening with Washboard Slim & The Bluelights. In New Haven tonight/Thursday it’s J.J. Thames & The Violet Revolt, and Black Snake Boots. Friday’s Happy Hour features Frank Critelli, and the bill for the late show includes Jonwayne, Danny Watts, Ceschi, and more. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and it’s a Black Noise Scam Reunion show later with Savage World and Cry Havoc. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is extending their run “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh through next week, They end a run of “Walk With Me,” a documentary about Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hahn, tonight. Now, here’s a rundown of WESU evening programming tonight!

Right after the Jive stick around for Homegrown, with Rob DeRosa the award winning  Music Show-playing Connecticut connected artists often treating the listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, the show also provides information about live shows in the area.

At 6:30 stay tuned for Imagine with Karen Stein, offering Peace through music! Listen to the best music from around the world and around the block!

From 8:00-9:30pm stick and stay with WESU for Evening Jazz with Bill Denert, providing A broad range of swing, be bop and avante garde with a sprinkling of new releases. "Hearing is the best experience"

At 9:30 its Crispix with Chris From indie rock to folk to electronic and more, Chris picks whatever he's feeling this week to share with you.

From 11-midnight it’s The American Empire with, Tootse Mutant offering an exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

From midnight-1am it’s Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee traveling through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

Stay tuned from 1-2am for Fake News with DJ Alias and DJ Nick at Night who offer An irreverent take on political punditry, provided by two guys who love the sound of their own voices.

From 2-3am it’s the Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson with a focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.


From 3-4am it’s Democracy Now! from Pacifica. 
At 4‑5am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 5‑9am.
