Good evening, it's Tuesday, August 30th, and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk programs featuring NPR, Pacifica, and independent and local public affairs broadcasts. Weeknights and weekends we bring you the best in free-form community programming.

Tonight in Middletown's Harbor Park, the Summer Sounds Weekly Concert Series closes out with the Middletown Symphonic Band bringing you popular classics. Concerts are free and open to the public, and begin at 7pm. Details at www.arts2go.org

Tonight, down in New Haven at Café Nine,  you can catch The 34’s, The Joiner Inners, and Black River Union.  Wednesday’s headliner at Café Nine is The Big Easy, appearing with Ourselves, Alone, The Right-Offs, and S.G. Friday’s Happy Hour artist is the Blasphemy Boys, with Matt Wixson’s Flying Circus, PUS, and The Abductors on board for the Friday night late show. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by Sarah Golley, Smillz, and more for the evening show. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra works out new material on Tuesday nights. Tomorrow/Wednesday it’s the Community Blues Jam, hosted by Tim McDonald this week. On Thursday, the Balkun Brothers host a Rock-N-Roll Residency, with special guests each week. Friday, you can hear blues standards and originals by the Salty Dog Blues Band. On Thursday at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s the long running monthly Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta. At 2 pm there’s Kerouac Café, a Free Poets Collective celebrating the legacy of the Beat Generation of poets. Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Nuts!,” a Sundance Award-winning documentary about an eccentric genius who built an empire during Depression-era America.  Also continuing is “Summertime,” a French film about two young women who fall in love in France’s 1971 early feminist era.  Both run through the weekend. Opening Friday is “My King (Mon Roi)”, a film about a woman who examines a turbulent relationship after a skiing accident. They also bring back a run of “Life, Animated,” a true story about a family discovery that Disney animated films will help them communicate with their troubled son. Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues the run of a new 25th anniversary 4K restoration of “Howards End,” starring Vanessa Redgrave and Anthony Hopkins, a saga of class relations in Edwardian England. On Friday and Saturday they’re screening “Captain Fantastic,” starring Viggo Mortenson as a parent bringing up six kids off the grid in an Oregon forest.  It runs through the weekend. Sunday opens the run of ‘Heironymus Bosch: Touched by the Devil,” a Dutch film that explores the depth of this artist’s legacy as they celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death. RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard, from 1:30-2:30am.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05-6 pm, stay tuned for Wild Wild Live with Chris for some live studio treats and other sonic events.

From 6 to 7pm, Audio Autonomy explores a  new topic and with a different host each week - covering  a mix of culture, politics, music and the arts - brought to you by Wesleyan students from the "Radio Production and the Politics of Independent Media" course.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee, where its all about lovers Rock, RnB, and Dancehall reggae plus Soca and other caribben sounds from the hit makers alongside artists from our region.

Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Commotion the Music Mixologist blends R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

From 11:30pm until 3am, Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

And then, from 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.
And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the BBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s the Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!

From 1:30-2:30am RootsWorld Radio with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 2:30-3:30am All Mixed Up with Peter Bochan from Pacifica Presents a collage of great music and current events soundbites.

BBC World report comes your way at 4 am and we begin tomorrow’s broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
