Monday 11-27-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday November 27th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which for five years now, has aired every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Now here's some of what's going on in our area this week:

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine tonight, they celebrate Manic Mondays with Mark Mulcahy and Frank Critelli. On Tuesday, it’s The Hooch, Mike Griffin, and Kvyn.  There’s an early show Wednesday with Natalie Tuttle, Ro, and Colgrove, followed later by a session of Words & Music. Thursday’s bill has The Joiner Inners, Western Estates, and Flight of Silence. Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, followed by a late show with Circus Delecti. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show is a Rock This Town Christmas Extravaganza. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it’s the usual Jazz Mondays with the Scott Sasanecki Group. Every Tuesday, see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. On Wednesday, the Community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald this week. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday you’re invited to a CD release party with rock ‘n’ rollers Comstock Station. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, it’s the Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends. On Wednesday, it’s Twice Is Nice: An Evening with Deer Tick. Thursday’s headliner is Piegons Playing Ping Pong, appearing with Flamingosis. Friday they bring you Shakedown, The Dead and Beyond, and more. At the Russell Library in Middletown, you can enjoy the Readers Theater’s production of Sam Shepard’s “Ages of the Moon” tonight at 6:30. The Classic Mystery Book discussion group meets Tuesday to talk about “The Unexpected Mrs. Polifax.”  The Middletown Commission on the Arts hosts a Hip Hop Culture Slam on Wednesday at 5 pm. They celebrate the end of National Novel Writing Month Thursday at 6 pm. Grammy Award-winning drummer and composer Robby Ameen is at the library on Saturday afternoon in the final performance of the Jazz up Close series.   www.russelllibrary.org

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown invites you to celebrate the end of National Novel Writing Month tonight at 6 pm. The Aligned with Source workshop is back Saturday morning, and the double bill in the evening features Eric Lee and Kim Hoffman. There’s a reception Sunday at 3 for artist Kathleen Curran Smits’ new exhibit, Change It Up, which can be viewed through the month. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its held-over run of “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, through Thursday. They also continue “Human Flow,” a documentary of the human migration and refugee crisis, through Friday. Weekend offerings include “Brimstone and Glory,” celebrating a pyrotechnic festival in Tultepac, Mexico, and “Equators,” a film about climate change in marginalized communities. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Unknown Girl,” a Belgian murder mystery, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Blade Runner 2049,” starring Ryan Gosling as a futuristic android. at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
