Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday November 16th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a bit of what's happening in our area this week:

Tonight, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts The Middlesex Drum Circle meets. It’s rock fusion on Friday with Someone You Can Xray, and Brian May brings you roots, blues, and folk rock. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. Saturday evening, enjoy acoustic folk with Seat of our Pants. On Sunday, John Basinger performs book nine of Paradise Lost, followed by a reception for the November photography art exhibition, Nature’s Wonders. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday at 10:30. www.buttonwood.org


At the Russell Library in Middletown, tonight  Paper Crafts for Adults, Friday morning. The Friends Book Sale happens this weekend. On Saturday, writers can share their work for National Novel Writing Month from 10 am to 2 pm, and the Authors 06457 series presents Gloria Perry and Treamell Lawrence with their latest books. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, has Reality Bomb, The Not Mikes, Pangalactic, and the Mike Brandon Band. Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte with DW Ditty, and the late show’s got José Oyola & The Astronauts, Hnry Flwer, UZOO, and Klokwize. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and José Oyola returns in the evening, along with Salt Cathedral, Tall Juan, and Ani Cordero. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Rob Lytle, Anne Castellano, Shesaidhesaid, and Dogbite, and they round out the weekend with Deke Dickerson and Nathaniel Hintz. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s,tonight it’s Liviu’s Invitational. The Funky Dawgz Brass Band takes the stage on Friday, and on Saturday it’s blues, Motown, and more with the Blue Devil Bluez. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/


At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on tonight, it’s Musiq Soulchild. On Sunday, they headline Hinder, and Josh Todd & The Conflict, appearing with Adelita’s Way and Wayland. www.toadsplace.com

Tonight Manic Presents takes you to The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden, with The Slackers, Llama Tsunami, and So Long Liberty. On Friday, Manic presents This Will Destroy You, and Sannhet. At the College Street Music Hall, Wednesday. Manic presents offers Gad Elmaleh. On Saturday it’s Silversun Pickups, and Minus The Bear.  Cherry St. Station in Wallingford brings you Televangelist, huo, Ourselves, Alone, and My Life As A Cartoon this Thursday. On Friday, it’s Orissa, Signals of Bedlam, and Black River Union. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes on Friday. On Saturday, it’s blues and funks with The Subdudes. This Saturday and Sunday The Vintage Players will premiere a brand new show by Carolyn Kirsch at Oddfellows playhouse in Middeltown. “So Bea it” is described as a quirky comedy with a heart of Gold and it stars Billy Johnstone, host of WESU’s own Broadway radio hour! Saturday evening here in Middletown, join WESU for Dinner and a show at our First Annual Free Form Feast and Festival, featuring over a dozen acts and an Italian buffet dinner – From Jazz and Americana to classical, word music, circus arts, comedy and more… there’s something for everyone.
