Mon., 7-31 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday July 31st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU  iddletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which this summer airs every Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow, a return visit by playwright Jacques Lamarr who first appeared on the show two years ago to talk about his year and a half studying for the priesthood in Rome. Jacques ultimately changed his mind about being a priest, but he's doing inspired work for the theater. He'll be joined on the show by NYC chef Rossi, the subject of his latest play, Raging Skillet, a deep, funny play about her youthful rebellion against her strict Jewish upbringing. Can't listen live? Friday’s Happy Hour is with Frank Critelli, followed by the night show headlining The Lively, and Zero Years. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends. The late show’s got an all-star band performing Cars Candy-O. The Sunday Buzz Matinee brings you Michael Hunton and Brad Byrd, and they round out the weekend with the blues guitar legend Junior Watson, appearing with Dean Shot & The Solid Senders on Sunday night.

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays today with the Nathan Edwards Quintet. On Tuesday Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra works out new material. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam hosts Ed Bradley this week. On Thursday it’s Sally’s house band, The Po’ Boys. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Lost in Paris,” a hilarious story of finding love in the City of Lights. Also continuing is “The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography,” a movie celebrating her thirty-five year career. Their Afternoon Movie is Sofia Copolla’s remake of “The Beguiled,” starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell.  On Thursday there’s a free public screening of students’ video projects from their youth filmmaking program, Eye on Video. A director Q & A and pizza reception follow. “Marie Curie,” a biopic of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist, opens Friday. Hartford’s Real Art Ways wraps up its run of “Letters from Baghdad,” a documentary about the British spy and explorer Gertrude Bell, and “The Women’s Balcony,” an Israeli film about women speaking truth to patriarchal power. "Lost in Paris" continues through Aug. 2nd. Tomorrow (Fri) they open “Marie Curie,” a biopic of the Nobel-winning scientist. They also open “The B-Side: Elsa Dorfman’s Portrait Photography,” a movie celebrating her thirty-five year career. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford wraps up its run of “ “Endless Poetry,” an autobiographical tale from Chilean Renaissance director Alejandro Jodorowsky.
