The City of Middletown Fireworks Festival has been postponed from  this Friday to Saturday due to weather concerns. Beginning at 5 p.m. this Saturday, performing live on stage for the festival, this year, are the City's Music Ambassadors. Starting things off at 5 p.m. will be The Rust'd Keys featuring Music Ambassador Dave Downs. Next up at 6:15 p.m. will be Music Ambassador Rani Arbo and daisy mayhem. Then, at 7:30 p.m. the band is the Jay Hoggard Quartet featuring Music Ambassador Jay Hoggard. The Middletown Symphonic Band will be providing patriotic music from approximately 8:30 p.m. through the fireworks.  The Middletown High Jazz Ensemble will be performing for the early crowd on the riverfront in Harbor Park beginning around 6:30 p.m. Come early for a good seat to view the fireworks and enjoy the activities. Seating sites are along the riverfront in Harbor Park and in front of City Hall at 245 DeKoven Drive, and there will be plenty of food vendors at both locations. Now here's a rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways ends their run of the 2015 Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Dheepan,” a Sri Lankan film about refugees who flee their homeland only to encounter more violence in the streets of Paris. Real Art Ways has extended their run of “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble,” through July 7th.  The 2016 SUNDANCE SHORT FILMS open Tomorrow (Friday) at Real Art Ways as well as “The Fits” an inspiring coming of age story of a girl who and her dance troupe who are affected by unexplainable “fits” that become a part of their work.  www.realartways.org  


Tonight (Thursday), Trinity College’s Cinestudio ends their run of “Cinema Paradiso,” a restored version of the 1989 Italian film about a director’s journey back to his childhood of watching movies in the hometown movie theater!. Opening tomorrow (Friday), is Fireworks Wednesday, in the US premiere of a 2006 film (just released in the States) by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. www.cinestudio.org    for details.

From 10:30-12am it’s the The American Empire with Tootse Mutant who explores the influence of American Imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.
At midnight it’s time for 4 hours of “The Greatest Sounds Under the Sun” with Sir Bruce laying down some serious old school R&B music.

Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s scheduled in the community this weekend.

In Middletown, at The Buttonwood Tree this evening it’s Medusa, a Hartford-based jazz quartet playing standards, R&B, and original compositions. Saturday morning there’s transitional Tai Chi class, and on Saturday night it’s a record release show for singer/songwriter Allysen Callery, with special guests Lys Guillorn, Paul Belbusti & American Elm. Throughout June you can experience the photography of Curt Tota’s exhibit “Joy”. New Haven's Cafe Nine Friday early 5pm set features Ed Peccerillo’s Flamenco, followed by Dangerous Animals, Lea, Off Days, and The Right Offs. Saturday’s Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, followed by the evening show with Savak, Hamish Kilgour, and Spectral Fangs. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Kath Bloom and Linda Draper, with the evening show bringing you Western Estates, Zulynette Morales, White Savages, and Zak G. Details at cafenine.com

In Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it's Roots of Creation, with reggae pop and electronic improvisation. On Saturday the Eric Ducoff Band takes the stage with vintage blues and more. Details at blackeyedsallys.com

The fourth annual Dance for Peace performance, a signature event of the non-profit Artists for World Peace, takes place this Saturday at the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook. An opening reception and performance by Melissa Craig starts at 7, followed by performances by acclaimed dancers and dance companies. will perform. Details at arts2go.org

Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are back at it! Here’s a rundown of some of the many places where you can support local farmers and get nutritious home-grown goods too:  On Mondays, check out New Britain; Tuesdays, it’s the Middletown South Green; Wednesdays, visit East Haddam; Thursdays, check out Durham or Middletown South Green; Fridays, we’ve got Cromwell, Higganum Village, Middletown North End, Plainville and Farmington; on Saturdays, there’s Meriden, Wallingford, Glastonbury, Berlin, Bristol and Newington. Now here's a rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Tonight Hartford's Real Art Ways opens “The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble,” about a group of international musicians performing at various locations across the globe.  Also opening is the 2015 Cannes Palme d’Or winner “Dheepan,” a Sri Lankan film about refugees who flee their homeland only to encounter more violence in the streets of Paris. Meanwhile tonight, Trinity College's Cinestudio opens a run of “Cinema Paradiso,” a restored version of the 1989 Italian film about a director’s journey back to his childhood of watching movies in the hometown movie theater! Details at cinestudio.org

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05-6 pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live with Chris for some live studio treats and other sonic events.

From 6 to 7pm, Audio Autonomy explores a  new topic and with a different host each week - covering  a mix of culture, politics, music and the arts - brought to you by Wesleyan students from the "Radio Production and the Politics of Independent Media" course.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - offering listeners a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Commotion the Music Mixologist blends R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

From 11:30pm until 3am Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

And then, from 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the 
BBC World News 
- a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!

After that from 8-10am you can catch Weekend Edition, Saturday from NPR.

Thursday's JIVE

Good evening, it's Monday, June 23rd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk programs featuring NPR, Pacifica, and independent and local public affairs broadcasts. Weeknights and weekends we bring you the best in free-form community programming. Now, here's a rundown of what's happening in our area this week:

Up next at 8 it’s Bill Denert Evening Jazz with a broad range of swing, bebop and experimental jazz with a sprinkling of new releases.

From 9:30-10:30pm enjoy hometown browns with dj jaFREE and the nan who offer South Asian diasporic meditations on: music, talk and live art. Half-music, half-music workshop. 
From 10:30-12am it’s the The American Empire with Tootse Mutant who explores the influence of American Imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

At midnight it’s time for 4 hours of “The Greatest Sounds Under the Sun” with Sir Bruce laying down some serious old school R&B music.
The BBC World Report takes over from 4-5am and we start each weekday off bright and early with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
