Tuesday 10-31-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday October 31st. Happy Halloween!  This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven tonight, Café Nine’s Halloween Party features Sub-Urban, Dangerous Animals, Wolf Harbor, and On The Fritz. Tomorrow/Wednesday’s headliner at Café Nine is The Woggles, appearing with Jeremy & The Harlequins, and Stupidity. On Thursday it’s J.J. Thames & The Violet Revolt, and Black Snake Boots. Friday’s Happy Hour features Frank Critelli, and the bill for the late show includes Jonwayne, Danny Watts, Ceschi, and more. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and it’s a Black Noise Scam Reunion show later with Savage World and Cry Havoc. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Beekeepers and Robert C. Fullerton, followed by a late show with The Wild One and a Forever: Tom Petty Tribute Night.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Tonight (Tues), Performance 20/20, The Hartt School of Music’s Honor Chamber Music Program, presents a free concert at 8 pm at the Fuller Music Building on the University of Hartford Campus. www.harttweb.hartford/edu 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight and every Tuesday, you can see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. This Thursday at Black-eyed Sallys it’s Liviu’s Invitational. It’s dirty punk reggae on Friday with Danny Pease and the Regulators, and on Saturday Poppa Chubby is back in town. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, tonight, they’ve got New Found Glory and Roam. Thursday they headline Krewella, appearing with Sigma and Ragepak. The spotlight is on Kranium on Friday, and Sunday’s show has Dirty Heads, The Unlikely Candidates, and Tyrone’s Jacket.  www.toadsplace.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts a faculty panel discussion tomorrow/Wednesday at Ring Performing Arts Hall in conjunction with the Davison Art Center exhibition Sasha Rudensky: Acts and Illusions. Tomorrow evening/Wednesday, music legend Rick Berlin presents a talk about his book, “The Paragraphs.” At The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown. Thursday, Matthew Chaves talks about his book “Signs of Hope: Messages from Subway Therapy.” At Wesleyan RJ Julis Bookstore. Wesleyan alumna and racism scholar, Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum returns to the bookstore on Friday with her new book “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown, tomorrow/Wednesday, the Classic Mystery Book Discussion group explores “The Bishop Murder Case.” You can join an Author Talk on Thursday with Edward A Hagan, who presents “To Vietnam in Vain: Memoir of an Irish-American Intelligence Advisor 1969-1970.” Writers working on National Novel Writing Month are invited to stop in on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm to share their work. There’s another author talk on Sunday when Craig Grossi presents “Craig and Fred.” Enjoy their ongoing exhibit, Over the Top: Liberty and Victory Bond Posters from WWI, through the month.  www.russelllibrary.org

While Middletown’s Cypress Grille is gone, but Jimmy and Joe are still making the music happen with an Open Mic night tonight at Vera Cucina Rustico, on Saybrook Rd. here in Middletown.   The Bus hosts this evening and Festivities get under way at 8 PM when the band plays a set, and brings on guests. Cherry St. Station in Wallingford hosts the Immolation Atonement Tour 2017 tomorrow (Weds) night. On Friday it’s Amanda Jean’s “F - Cancer” Benefit with a variety of performers. Thursday, brings Bob Gotta’s long standing monthly Acoustic Open Mic to The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts their Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Kyla. It’s empowering yoga on Tuesday afternoon. On Friday night it’s a special Tellabration with the Story City Troup. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and you can enjoy blues, jugband, rockabilly mix , and more Saturday evening with Washboard Slim & The Bluelights. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you blues, folk, and soul this Thursday with The Wood Brothers. On Friday, it’s John Lodge of The Moody Blues with the 10,000 Light Years Tour. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

The Middletown International Film Festival continues tonight/Tuesday with a screening of “Difret,” an Ethiopian film about child abduction into marriage. It’s at Chapman Hall on the Middlesex Community College campus. Details at www.russelllibrary.org


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, and “Walk With Me,” a documentary about Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hahn, through Thursday. Tonight and tomorrow, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Kedi,” a film about Istanbul street cats, through Wednesday. Now, here’s a rundown of WESU evening programming tonight!

Right after the jive at Five stay tuned for Spilled Milk with Charlotte offering assorted sounds right off the bedtime stories shelf!

From 6-8pm tonight,  it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. Tonight, Connecticut guitarist extraordinaire, Dana Merritt will be live in the studio with Bill.

At 8pm, DJ Chaim fills in for J-Cherry.
Chaim continues in his regular time from 9-10pm with The Test Patterns Show.

At 10pm it’s Wes Sports and Beyond with DJ Steven featuring Sports Talk and interviews.
From 11-midnight stay tuned for Dumpster Dive with DJ Smelly featuring punk, art pop and D.I.Y coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous
From 1-2am soup sounds with joseph features home recordings, lo-fi, concerts, field recordings, and esoterica.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am
at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
