Monday 11-6-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday November 6th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow: a coupla Catholic guys sittin' around talkin'. Bart and Dick Troy, both in their early 80s and with children who are no longer Catholic, will reminisce about the pre-Vatican II Catholicism of their youth and express their hopes for the future of the faith. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, Manic Mondays features Thor & Friends, and Rivener. Tuesday brings you The Proud Flesh and Mike Kusek. On Wednesday, it’s the Tinklebelle’s Ladies Variety Show. Thursday’s double bill has Casey James Prestwood and the Burning Angels, along with Jay Russell and the Split Coils. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Sulls, and the late show headlines Lucas Brode and Ourselves, Alone, appearing with Human Flourishing. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and later it’s The Proletariat, Stefan Christensen & Friends, and Construction Paper. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight it’s the usual Jazz Mondays with a special guest each week. Every Tuesday, see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday’s Blues Jam is with Gene Donaldson. On Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts their Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Rob & Terri. It’s empowering yoga on Tuesday afternoon, followed by Laughter Yoga in the evening. On Friday, join The BeeKeepers for an evening of original and cover songs that pay tribute to great female artists. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening it’s the Sharp 5 Jazz Ensemble. On Sunday, the NEAR and Far Storytellers take the Buttonwood stage. At Toad’s Place in New Haven, it’s the Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends. On Tuesday, it’s KRS-ONE. Thursday’s headliner is Zach Deputy, appearing with McLovins and Sarah Blacker. Manic Presents brings variety to The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden this week. On Thursday, it’s Mark Mulcahy, appearing with The Philistines Jr. Friday’s bill has The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. On Saturday, it’s Knuckle Puck, appearing with Movements, With Confidence, and Homesafe.  On Sunday they bring you Wax Tailor and Dirty Art Club. They’re also at the College Street Music Hall, starting Thursday with Shawn Colvin and Her Band, and Larry Campbell with Teresa Williams. At the Russell Library in Middletown, the Justice Book Group meets Tuesday to discuss “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” On Wednesday you’re invited to discuss food and all its aspects with Jeff Hush, founder of Food & Movement Therapy. On Thursday, explore WWI with genealogist Bryna O’Sullivan in her workshop, Doughboys and Yeomanettes: Tracing Your World War One Family History. And on Sunday at Crowell Concert Hall, you can enjoy Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble performing Cellular Songs. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, and “Jane,” a documentary about conservationist Jane Goodall, through Thursday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Indivisible,” an Italian film about conjoined twin singers, through Wednesday. On Friday they open “Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House,” about the FBI man known as Deep Throat who leaked the Watergate scandal. and at 3am  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica 

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
