Good evening, it's Wednesday November 29th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Right about now starting at 5pm, here in  Middletown, The Middletown Commission on the Arts hosts a Hip Hop Culture Slam at the Russell Library. The Library celebrates the end of National Novel Writing Month this Thursday evening at 6 pm. Grammy Award-winning drummer and composer Robby Ameen is at the library on Saturday afternoon in the final performance of Noah Baerman’s Jazz up Close series.   www.russelllibrary.org
Also this (Weds) evening, here in Middeltown, Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore hosts, mystery writer Jeffrey L Diamond speaking about his new book, “Live to Tape.” You can bring the kids to their Santa Letter Writing Workshop on Saturday morning.  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, there’s an early show at 7pm tonight with Natalie Tuttle, Ro, and Colgrove.  Later tonight, Café Nines monthly event Words & Music features, writers poets, comedians and more! Thursday’s bill has The Joiner Inners, Western Estates, and Flight of Silence. Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, followed by a late show with Circus Delecti. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show is a Rock This Town Christmas Extravaganza. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, their weekly Wednesday night Community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, tonight. It’s Liviu’s Invitational tomorrow/Thursday, and on Friday at Black-eyed Sally’s, you’re invited to a CD release party for Comstock Station. At Toad’s Place in New Haven tonight/Wednesday, it’s Twice Is Nice: An Evening with Deer Tick”. Thursday’s headliner is Piegons Playing Ping Pong, appearing with Flamingosis. Friday at Toads you can catch Shakedown playing the music of the Grateful Dead and beyond with opening acts, the John Spignesi Band, The Dilemma, and 8WALE. The Women’s Committee of the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford opens its 44th annual Festival of Trees & Traditions tonight/Wednesday with Art After Dark: Night of Illumination. The event starts at 5 pm. Details at www.thewadsworth.org 

Tomorrow/Thursday night in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree you can catch the Eric Mintel Quartet.  Story City Troupe returns to the Buttonwood Tree Friday night. The Aligned with Source workshop continues Saturday morning, and Saturday night’s double bill features Eric Lee and Kim Hoffman. There’s a reception Sunday afternoon at 3 for artist Kathleen Curran Smits’ new exhibit, Change It Up. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings. www.buttonwood.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its held-over run of “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, through Thursday. They also continue “Human Flow,” a documentary of the human migration and refugee crisis, through Friday. Weekend offerings include “Brimstone and Glory,” celebrating a pyrotechnic festival in Tultepac, Mexico, and “Equators,” a film about climate change in marginalized communities. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford ends their run of “The Unknown Girl,” a Belgian murder mystery, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Blade Runner 2049,” starring Ryan Gosling as a futuristic android. From 11 -midnight it's Bitchin’. WESU's feminist radio hour packed with reporting on world events, conversations about resistance, personal narratives and eclectic music by women and queer artists


And at midnight it's Who Sampled? with Margilla Madman and Bebbs. A music show that plays songs that sample other songs.


From 1 - 2 am it's Kellex and Kleenog’s Radio Hour.



From 2 - 3 it's Well into the Eighties with Daniel Crippin. Classic alternative music from WESU's extemsive vinyl archive paired with the best in new indie rock.


From 3 - 4 it's Democracy Now from pacifica/


The BBC World News comes on board at 4am followed at 5 with Morning Edition from NPR.
