Tuesday 11-28-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday November 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine tonight you can catch a triple bill featuring The Hooch, Mike Griffin, and Kvyn.  There’s an early show Wednesday with Natalie Tuttle, Ro, and Colgrove, followed later by a session of Words & Music. Thursday’s bill has The Joiner Inners, Western Estates, and Flight of Silence. Friday’s Happy Hour features Laura Dowding, followed by a late show with Circus Delecti. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show is a Rock This Town Christmas Extravaganza. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, on Tuesday nights you can see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday night at Sally’s, their weekly Community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday at Black-eyed Sally’s, you’re invited to a CD release party for Comstock Station. Wednesday morning, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown offers HulaZen Yoga based on Hawaii’s oral traditions. You can enjoy jazz on Thursday night at The Buttonwood with the Eric Mintel Quartet.  Story City Troupe returns to the Buttonwood Tree Friday night. The Aligned with Source workshop continues Saturday morning, and Saturday night’s double bill features Eric Lee and Kim Hoffman. There’s a reception Sunday afternoon at 3 for artist Kathleen Curran Smits’ new exhibit, Change It Up. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings. www.buttonwood.org


At Toad’s Place in New Haven Wednesday, it’s Twice Is Nice: An Evening with Deer Tick. Thursday’s headliner is Piegons Playing Ping Pong, appearing with Flamingosis. Friday they bring you Shakedown playing the music of the Grateful Dead and beyond.  John Spignesi Band, The Dilemma, and 8WALE open that show. Wednesday at 5pm, The Middletown Commission on the Arts hosts a Hip Hop Culture Slam at the Russell Library in Middletown. They celebrate the end of National Novel Writing Month this Thursday evening at 6 pm. Grammy Award-winning drummer and composer Robby Ameen is at the library on Saturday afternoon in the final performance of Noah Baerman’s Jazz up Close series.   www.russelllibrary.org

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues its held-over run of “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, through Thursday. They also continue “Human Flow,” a documentary of the human migration and refugee crisis, through Friday. Weekend offerings include “Brimstone and Glory,” celebrating a pyrotechnic festival in Tultepac, Mexico, and “Equators,” a film about climate change in marginalized communities. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Unknown Girl,” a Belgian murder mystery, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Blade Runner 2049,” starring Ryan Gosling as a futuristic android. From 6-8pm tonight,  it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

At 8pm, Its Voice of the city with J-Cherry for a spotlight on the local art scene.

From 9-10pm it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal


At 10pm it’s Radio Writer's Salon with DJ Steven where Wesleyan profs and student authors read their works, talk about the writing process and conferences.

From 11-midnight stay tuned for Dumpster Dive with DJ Smelly featuring punk, art pop and D.I.Y coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At Midnight, it’s Yours Truly with DJ Balsamic and DJ Megnanimous

From 1-2am soup sounds with joseph features home recordings, lo-fi, concerts, field recordings, and esoterica.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am

at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
