Good evening, it's Thursday, February 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.
Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, the Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with the theme of “Good Fit/Bad Fit.” The Aligned With Source Workshop is on as usual Saturday morning, and you can rock it out with the Sunny Train Family Concert Saturday afternoon. In the evening, it’s Moon Train, an almost-acoustic band playing folk, jazz, bluegrass and more. You’re invited to worship Sunday morning at 10 am with Rev. Ronnie Bantum and Pastor Sandra Steele. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a variety of free events this week. On Friday and Saturday, the Art History Symposium “Canonicity Revisited,” takes place at Boger Hall. May Klug performs a Senior Recital at Memorial Chapel Friday evening. There’s a guided exhibition tour of Audible Bacillus on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery. Also at the Zilkha, the experimental music group lucky dragons performs Other Transformations on Sunday. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their annual Oscar-nominee short film series, along with “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” a documentary about two young black men in Alabama. Also continuing is “Rubén Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience, and “Roma,” a movie of domestic strife and social hierarchy in Mexico City. On Friday they open “To Dust,” a dark comedy about a Hasidic Jew widower, and “Never Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. From 1-2am (2, 4), it’s Femme Gems and Jams with DJ Stevie Hicks. Each show will discuss the biographies of lesser known historical female figures and play a curated mixtape that she might jam to.
On air from 2-3am (2,4) is Splitting Hairs with DJ Shake and Bake and DJ McKenzie. A humorous musical discussion show dedicated to analyzing the lyrics of popular songs, and finding their inconsistencies and comical meanings.

Good evening, it's Monday, February 25th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight hosted by Bill Katz. Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen Laughter Yoga happens Wednesday evenings and Thursdays at noon, and the Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with the theme of “Good Fit/Bad Fit.” The Aligned With Source Workshop is on as usual Saturday morning, and you can rock it out with the Sunny Train Family Concert Saturday afternoon. From 12:30-3am, check out OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!
Rounding off the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am is Back Down the Bayou. Louisiana Barn Dance, Classic Country, Western Swing, Hillbilly, Rockabilly, Americana Music.
