Good evening, it's Wednesday, May 8th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen happens this evening and Thursday at noon, and on Thursday evening you can hear pedal steel guitar and more with singer/songwriters Steve Dedman and Peter Lehndorff. The Coconuts! return to the stage on Friday with music, fun, and special guest Washboard Slim. Come one, come all on Saturday afternoon to catch the Sunny Train Interactive Family Music Show. In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, they’ve got big Fang, Fiction, North by North, and Dangerous Animals. They headline The Drawbar on Thursday, appearing with Little Silver. Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte, followed by the late show with Nekromantix, Rezurex, and The Braniax.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, followed by Day 1 of the Elm City folk Festival in the evening. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts their usual Scrabble Wednesday is at 5 pm. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Thursday afternoon, followed by a Books and Brews event offsite at Stubborn Beauty Brewery to discuss “The Alice Network” by Kate Quinn. The Friends Book Sale happens Friday and Saturday, and there’s Mindfuness Meditation on Saturday morning. Enjoy bagels on Saturday morning at another One Book on the Riverbend event, with a discussion of “Educated” by Tara Westover. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam tonight features Ed Bradley. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. At the Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown tonight, meet Lary Bloom, with his new work, “Sol LeWitt: A Life of Ideas.” On Thursday, pilot and therapist Tom Bunn presents “Panic Free,” his tools to address panic, anxiety, and claustrophobia. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown sponsors free events this week, including tonight at Ring Hall, when they present Voices from Prison, a theater event of the “Theater Behind Bars” program at the Cheshire Correctional Institution. Or check out Composing, Performing, and Listening to Experimental Music at World Music Hall. The Annual Organ Romp happens Thursday at Memorial Chapel, and on Saturday, there’s a Reception for the Senior Thesis Showcase at the Zilkha Gallery. Manic Presents hosts events at The Space Ballroom in Hamden, starting with EyeHateGod, Negative Approach, and more this evening. On Thursday, it’s Ghost Light, featuring Holly Bowling and Raina Mullen. Friday’s bill has Bad Bad Hats, Boyscott, and Similar Kind. On Saturday, they bring you Dub Trio, the Balkun Brothers, and Polluter, and on Sunday they headline Damien Jurado, appearing with Anna St. Louis. At the College Street Music Hall, they bring you Turnover, Turnstile, Reptaliens, and Illusion on Thursday. Up in Hartford tonight, it’s Karaoke Night at The Russell. At the Arch Street Tavern, BooYah! Wednesday plays the 60’s, and they bring you Harsh Armadillo and Erica T Bryan The New Mosaic on Friday. On Saturday, they feature TherabeaT. The Friday Night Flavor series at the Hartford Flavor Company brings you Glambat and Lil Sluggers this week, and they host a Mother’s Day Floral Workshop on Saturday morning. The Cedar Hill Cemetery hosts its annual Bird Walk on Saturday with Jay Kaplan from the Roaring Brook Nature Center. It’s Second Saturdays for Families this week at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972, and “Rafiki,” a breakthrough Kenyan film about lesbian love, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Hail Satan?” a documentary about the Satanic Temple. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Birds of Passage,” about conflict within the indigenous people of Colombia, the Wayúu, through Wednesday. There’s a one-night showing of “Giant Little Ones,” a film about gender fluidity, on Thursday. On Friday they open a weekend run of Tim Burton’s live action film, “Dumbo.” Sunday’s opening is “Diane,” featuring Mary Kay Place as a rural Massachusetts woman who finds purpose in serving others. At 9:30 until 11pm DJ Anton Banks brings you The Vault. Presents listeners with the latest in hard techno,
