Monday 5-20-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, May 20th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Moments of Gratitude and Open Mic tonight hosted by Terri and Rob. They’ve got Laughter Yoga with Dawn on Tuesday, and Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen happens Wednesday evening and Thursday at noon. The Middlesex Drum Circle is back on Thursday, and on Friday you can enjoy jazz with the Matt Dwonszyk Trio. The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, followed by a Music Workshop with Rob DeSorbo. The wrap up Saturday with An Evening with folk artist Rupert Wates, appearing with Andrew Biagiarelli.

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Monday headlines Pangalactic, coming your way with The Forest Room and The Enigmas. Tuesday is Spazzout Brotha’s with Paranormal Adam U Congo, along with Montie Beats, Beyond Xcellence, and much more. There’s a Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice on Wednesday, and it’s Emo Night Live! On Thursday.  Friday’s Happy Hour features The 509ers, followed by the late show with Crunk Witch, Fiction, and Zero Years. You can catch Ditch Boys and The New Neighbors Saturday night, and the Sunday Memorial Day BBQ and Blues Matinée features the George Baker Band, followed by the late show with Shake ‘N’ Vibrate.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays headlines the Mike Carabello Trio. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam features Gene Donaldson, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. You can catch R & B and funky soul on Friday with Laura Rain & The Caesars, and on Saturday, they’ve got the #1 Billboard Blues artist Anthony Gomes and his band.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Richard J Friswell tonight at 7 pm with “Hudson River Chronicles, along with Lee A Jocobus, author of “The Romantic Soul of Emma Now.” On Wednesday you can meet Donna Harrington-Leuker, author of “Books for Idle Hours: Nineteenth-Century Publishing and the Rise of Summer Reading.” The monthly Philosophy Night happens Saturday at 6 pm. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Rockfall Foundation and the Jonah Center for Earth and Art sponsor Brian Stewart’s talk on Tipping Points tonight at 7 pm at the Dekoven Community Center. Keep Flying, Pearl Sugar, Dagwood, and Every Branch are at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op on Tuesday. The Mac also brings you Shy, Glambat, and Snowpiler on Saturday for a Triple Record Release. The State House in New Haven hosts an inaugural Bat Soup Comedy Night on Tuesday with Aug Stone, musical guest Owen McMahon, and much more. On Wednesday they present The Last Hoot, an SCSU Student Film Screening event. It’s a night of metal on Friday with Sannhet, Planning For Burial, Elizabeth Colour Wheel, and Institution. Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall Tuesday with Tash Sultana’s North America 2019 tour, along with the Pierce Brothers. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, they bring you Tank and the Bangas, and Adia Victoria, on Thursday. Mephiskapheles, Pilfers, Stop The Presses, and more come your way at the Space Ballroom on Friday, and on Saturday they headline Dirty Projectors at the space, appearing with Buke and Gase. The Russell Library in Middletown announces that their Job and Career specialists Christy Billings and Bob Carlson will be guest speakers the Guilford Job Network on Tuesday evening. Scrabble Wednesday comes your way at 5 pm, and the Veterans Writing Group meets Thursday afternoon. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, you can catch the Average White Band with their Funk Up Your Night tour on Friday. Infinity Norfolk brings you folk legend Jonathan Edwards on Saturday, and they’re holding a Memorial Day BBQ Buffet on Monday. www.infinityhall.com

Toad’s Place brings you another Backlight Glow Party on Friday with performances on two stages, and on Sunday they headline Spragga Benz, appearing with Jada kingdom, Kemar Highcon, and K’Coneil.  www.toadsplace.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford features Pink Cocoon, Afghan Haze, and Lightkeeper on Wednesday. On Friday it’s Crypitus, Screams of Hockomock, and more. It’s a Cry Havoc! Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972, and “Little Woods,” a drama about two women in a small Western town. They also continue “Iyengar: The Man, Yoga and the Student’s Journey,” until Thursday. On Friday they open “The Serengeti Rules,” a nature documentary about how to heal ecosystems, and “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché,” a documentary about the first female filmmaker. At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford the run of “Gloria Bell” ends tonight. Tomorrow they open “The Mustang,” about a convict working in a wild horse-training program. Sunday’s Bolshoi Ballet matinée features two pieces, “Carmen,” and “Petrushka,” and in the evening they’re screening “War and Peace, Part 1,” a 1965 Russian production of the Tolstoy’s classic. The French Film and Discussion series at the Middletown Library continues on Tuesday with a screening of “Chocolat,” about one of the most successful black entertainers in modern France. In conjunction with the Middletown Racial Justice Coalition they’re screening “The Hate U Give,” on Saturday, based on the book by Angie Thomas. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to smooth contemporary sounds, it’s a well-rounded jazz show for true jazz heads.

From 6-6:30pm, catch the final episode of Point of Interest where DJ Balsamic and DJ Ween interview various people about the fascinating work done by people in the Middletown community.

From 6:30-8pm, catch 75% Folk with Michael Benson. A mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music. Occasional live interviews.

After 75% Folk until 9:30, it’s (1,3,5) Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30pm-11pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as LIVE requests, TV Trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z. Playing billboard hot 100 hits.

From 12:30-2:30 stay tuned for a special farewell broadcast from some of our student broadcasters who are graduating this week weekend and wrapping up their time in Middletown.

From 2:30-3:30am Roots World Radio takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3:30-4am is Nutmeg Junction, a new originally scripted audio theater program that celebrates every genre of the golden age of radio.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
