Fri 5-3-19 Jive

Good evening, it's Friday, May 3rd, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Story City Troupe takes the stage at The Buttonwood Tree tonight with tales about “Awkward Moments.” The 12th Annual Composers and Improvisors Festival takes place Saturday night, with special guests including jazz artist Joe Fonda. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight's Happy Hour features The Shellye Valauskas Experience, followed by a Birthday Bash for Audra featuring Chaser Eight, The Lost Weekend, and Strange Neighbors. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Dust Hat, Honch, and Jacques Le Coque. The Sunday Buzz Matinée Snughouse, and The Girls from Ruby Falls, and they finish up the weekend in the evening with Blush and Double Winter. http://www.cafenine.com/

At the State House in New Haven tonight, the theme is rock and experimental on Friday with Guerilla Toss, Crag Mask, Sean Henry, and Underwear. They headline Sister Willow on Saturday, bringing you Americana and more.  www.statehousepresents.com


At the Arch Street Tavern, Eggy and Consider the Source are in the house this evening, and you can enjoy a Star Wars-themed party on Saturday with One Time Weekend. At Little River Restoratives, The RapOet & Friends brings you Hip-Hop tonight. On Saturday, the Butler McCook House and Garden hosts a Charter Oak & Coltsville Walking Tour, and it’s Sensual Salsa Saturdays at the Red Rock Tavern. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts and Student choreographers present their Spring Dance Concert tonight and Saturday at the Patricelli Theater. Other events at Wesleyan this week include a performance by the University Orchestra on Saturday evening at Crowell concert hall. The Russell Library in Middletown holds their First Fridays Book Group this evening at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga, to discuss “Tell Me More,” by Kelly Corrigan. There’s a “Planting and Growing” workshop for families on Saturday morning, and the Wesleyan String Ensemble performs at 11 a.m at the Library. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces a Cupcakes, Cookies & Canvases Under the Sea session this evening. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Songs of Hope and Conviction, a mixed music concert sponsored by Indivisible Connecticut and featuring The Shinolas, on Sunday. Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts a birthday party for Sarah tonight with VOID, EGG, Imbroglio, Down with Rent, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

This evening, Hartford's Real Art Ways opens “Rafiki,” a breakthrough Kenyan film about lesbian love. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford presents Oscar-nominated short films this week, with Live Action this evening and Animation on Saturday. On Saturday evening they present the 8th Annual Trinity Film Festival with short films from undergraduates, and on Sunday they open a run of “Birds of Passage,” about conflict in the indigenous people of Colombia, the Wayúu. Right after the Jive, stay tuned for Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.
Next up from 6:00-6:30pm, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project with DJ Itsjobro, DJ Juicebox, and DJ Livor Mortis, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

From 6:30-7pm, catch What’s In A Song? With Shiva. What's In A Song takes you through a different musical culture or genre every show through the lens of a single song.

From 7-8:30pm, its Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., for a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 8:30-10pm it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly.
At 10 until 11:30pm, Russell Fills in for Chris M’s P Permanent Collection for an hour of creative Non-toxic radio.

Following Permanent Collection from 11:30pm-12:30am, An A and a B with DJ N. spotlights the  unknown, hidden gems along with the songs a band is well known for.

From 12:30-3am, stay tuned for OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am is Back Down the Bayou.
