Good evening, it's Friday, May 24th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

At the Russell Library in Middletown There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room tomorrow morning, and author Mihn Lê will be there presenting his newest children’s book, “Drawn Together.” Check the easy color-coded website calendar for more events and happenings for all ages.  www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven tonight at Café Nine, Crunk Witch, Fiction, and Zero Years take the stage. Here in Middletown, at The Buttonwood Tree tonight you can enjoy jazz with the Matt Dwonszyk Trio.Tomorrow afternoon the Buttonwood hosts a Music Workshop with Rob DeSorbo. They wrap up tomorrow evening with folk artist Rupert Wates, appearing with Andrew Biagiarelli. www.buttonwood.org


The Middletown Arts & Culture Office brings you Shy, Glambat, and Snowpiler tomorrow for a Triple Record Release. Manic Presents brings Mephiskapheles, Pilfers, Stop The Presses, and more to the Space Ballroom tonight, and tomorrow they headline Dirty Projectors at the space, appearing with Buke and Gase. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts sponsors Remembering Sam Miller ’79, a memorial featuring Eiko Otake, tomorrow afternoon at the CFA Theater. There’s a free Reception for the Senior Thesis Showcase tomorrow at the Zilkha Gallery. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa/

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways  opens “The Serengeti Rules,” a nature documentary about how to heal ecosystems, and “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché,” a documentary about the first female filmmaker. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

At Trinity College’s Cinestudio they continue“The Mustang,” about a convict working in a wild horse-training program. Sunday’s Bolshoi Ballet matinée features two pieces, “Carmen,” and “Petrushka,” and in the evening they’re screening “War and Peace, Part 1,” a 1965 Russian production of the Tolstoy’s classic. The Middletown Racial Justice Coalition is screening “The Hate U Give,” tomorrow, based on the book by Angie Thomas. There’s a post-film discussion and refreshments, and registration is required. Check the website for times and details.  www.russelllibrary.org

Right after the Jive, stay tuned for free Talk radio with 5:05-7pm Deni

From 7-8:30pm, its Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., for a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 8:30-10pm stay tuned for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing and rockabilly.

At 10 until 11:30pm, stick around for Chris M’s P Permanent Collection for an hour of creative Non-toxic radio.


Following Permanent Collection from 11:30pm-12:30am stay tuned for some glam rock and heavy metal on Noize in the Attic!

From 12:30-3am, stay tuned for OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am is Back Down the Bayou.
