Good evening, it's Tuesday, May 21st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Russell Library in Middletown announces that their Job and Career specialists Christy Billings and Bob Carlson will be guest speakers the Guilford Job Network tonight/Tuesday evening. Scrabble Wednesday comes your way at 5 pm, and the Veterans Writing Group meets Thursday afternoon. There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning, and author Mihn Lê will be there presenting his newest children’s book, “Drawn Together.” Check the easy color-coded website calendar for more events and happenings for all ages.  www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight, you can catch Spazzout Brotha’s with Paranormal Adam U Congo, along with Montie Beats, Beyond Xcellence, and much more. There’s a Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice at Café nine on Wednesday, and it’s Emo Night Live! On Thursday.  Friday Café Nine’s 5pm Happy Hour set features The 509ers. Later Friday night, Crunk Witch, Fiction, and Zero Years take the stage. You can catch Ditch Boys and The New Neighbors Saturday night at The Nine, and the Sunday Memorial Day BBQ and Blues Matinée features the George Baker Band, followed by the late show with Shake ‘N’ Vibrate.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday nights. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam features Gene Donaldson, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Donna Harrington-Leuker, author of “Books for Idle Hours: Nineteenth-Century Publishing and the Rise of Summer Reading.” The monthly Philosophy Night happens Saturday at 6 pm. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Weds Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree hosts the Middlesex Drum Circle on Thursday, and on Friday you can enjoy jazz with the Matt Dwonszyk Trio. Saturday afternoon the Buttonwood hosts a Music Workshop with Rob DeSorbo. They wrap up Saturday evening with folk artist Rupert Wates, appearing with Andrew Biagiarelli. www.buttonwood.org


Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that Keep Flying, Pearl Sugar, Dagwood, and Every Branch are at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op on this evening. The Mac also brings you Shy, Glambat, and Snowpiler on Saturday for a Triple Record Release. The State House in New Haven hosts an inaugural Bat Soup Comedy Night on tonight/Tuesday with Aug Stone, musical guest Owen McMahon, and much more. On Wednesday they present The Last Hoot, an SCSU Student Film Screening event. It’s a night of metal on Friday with Sannhet, Planning For Burial, Elizabeth Colour Wheel, and Institution. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, Manic Presents  Tank and the Bangas, and Adia Victoria, on Thursday. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972, and “Little Woods,” a drama about two women in a small Western town. They also continue “Iyengar: The Man, Yoga and the Student’s Journey,” until Thursday. On Friday they open “The Serengeti Rules,” a nature documentary about how to heal ecosystems, and “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché,” a documentary about the first female filmmaker. At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford the run of “Gloria Bell” ends tonight. Tomorrow they open “The Mustang,” about a convict working in a wild horse-training program. Sunday’s Bolshoi Ballet matinée features two pieces, “Carmen,” and “Petrushka,” and in the evening they’re screening “War and Peace, Part 1,” a 1965 Russian production of the Tolstoy’s classic. The French Film and Discussion series at the Middletown Library continues on Tuesday with a screening of “Chocolat,” about one of the most successful black entertainers in modern France. In conjunction with the Middletown Racial Justice Coalition they’re screening “The Hate U Give,” on Saturday, based on the book by Angie Thomas. From 6-9pm (tonight) catch Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill for an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways.

From 8-9pm, Its Voice of the City with J-Cherry for an hour of live and local arts, culture, and politics.

From 10-11pm, DJ Joshinvents takes you to (1, 3, 5) The Audible Underground. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

11-Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

From Midnight-1am, catch (1, 3, 5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. We deep dive into a different album every show and give them the stamp of approval or the cone of shame.

From 1-2am, there’s (1, 3, 5) Road Trip with DJ G and DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists all from the same hometown. No gas money required.

From 2-3am, tune in to (1, 3, 5) What’s Goin’ On? with Sam. Focus on an artist with songs under 1,000,000 plays and deep-dive on their career and their music. Also catch music reviews.

At 3am, stay tuned for 2 hrs of funk, soul, and RnB on Up Front Soul from Sanguine Fromage from Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
