Good evening, it's Wednesday, May 22nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

At the Russell Library in Middletown, Scrabble Wednesday comes your way at 5 pm, and the Veterans Writing Group meets Thursday afternoon. There’s Yoga in the Hubbard Room Saturday morning, and author Mihn Lê will be there presenting his newest children’s book, “Drawn Together.” Check the easy color-coded website calendar for more events and happenings for all ages.  www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday, you can catch the Comedy Open Mic hosted by Dan Rice, and it’s Emo Night Live! on Thursday.  Friday Café Nine’s 5pm Happy Hour set features The 509ers. Later Friday night, Crunk Witch, Fiction, and Zero Years take the stage. You can catch Ditch Boys and The New Neighbors Saturday night at The Nine, and the Sunday Memorial Day BBQ and Blues Matinée features the George Baker Band, followed by the late show with Shake ‘N’ Vibrate.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam featuring Gene Donaldson, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. You can catch R & B and funky soul on Friday with Laura Rain & The Caesars, and on Saturday, they’ve got the #1 Billboard Blues artist Anthony Gomes and his band.  http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Donna Harrington-Leuker, author of “Books for Idle Hours: Nineteenth-Century Publishing and the Rise of Summer Reading.” The monthly Philosophy Night happens Saturday at 6 pm. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree hosts the Middlesex Drum Circle on Thursday, and on Friday you can enjoy jazz with the Matt Dwonszyk Trio. Saturday afternoon the Buttonwood hosts a Music Workshop with Rob DeSorbo. They wrap up Saturday evening with folk artist Rupert Wates, appearing with Andrew Biagiarelli. www.buttonwood.org


The Middletown Arts & Culture Office brings you Shy, Glambat, and Snowpiler on Saturday for a Triple Record Release. At the State House in New Haven this evening/Wednesday they present The Last Hoot, an SCSU Student Film Screening event. It’s a night of metal on Friday with Sannhet, Planning For Burial, Elizabeth Colour Wheel, and Institution. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, Manic Presents  Tank and the Bangas, and Adia Victoria, on Thursday. Mephiskapheles, Pilfers, Stop The Presses, and more come your way at the Space Ballroom on Friday, and on Saturday they headline Dirty Projectors at the space, appearing with Buke and Gase. At Infinity Hall in Hartford, you can catch the Average White Band with their Funk Up Your Night tour on Friday. Infinity Norfolk brings you folk legend Jonathan Edwards on Saturday, and they’re holding a Memorial Day BBQ Buffet on Monday. www.infinityhall.com

Toad’s Place brings you another Backlight Glow Party on Friday with performances on two stages, and on Sunday they headline Spragga Benz, appearing with Jada kingdom, Kemar Highcon, and K’Coneil. www.toadsplace.com

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford features Pink Cocoon, Afghan Haze, and Lightkeeper tonight/Wednesday. On Friday it’s Crypitus, Screams of Hockomock, and more. It’s a Cry Havoc! Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972, and “Little Woods,” a drama about two women in a small Western town. They also continue “Iyengar: The Man, Yoga and the Student’s Journey,” until Thursday. On Friday they open “The Serengeti Rules,” a nature documentary about how to heal ecosystems, and “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché,” a documentary about the first female filmmaker. At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford the run of “Gloria Bell” ends tonight. Tomorrow they open “The Mustang,” about a convict working in a wild horse-training program. Sunday’s Bolshoi Ballet matinée features two pieces, “Carmen,” and “Petrushka,” and in the evening they’re screening “War and Peace, Part 1,” a 1965 Russian production of the Tolstoy’s classic. The French Film and Discussion series at the Middletown Library continues on Tuesday with a screening of “Chocolat,” about one of the most successful black entertainers in modern France. In conjunction with the Middletown Racial Justice Coalition they’re screening “The Hate U Give,” on Saturday, based on the book by Angie Thomas. From 8-9:30, it’s The Warehouse with Mike Nyce - The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

At 9:30 until 11pm DJ Anton Banks brings you The Vault. Presents listeners with the latest in hard techno, 
minimal, tech-house, and leftfield mixed live. Featuring exclusive music from international artists.

From 11pm to 3am, stay tuned for 4 hrs of sweet Reggae and RnB with Unique Chiffon. 

From 3-4am is Noize in the Attic, Where Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You. Serving Connecticut it’s hard rock fix of classic Heavy Metal as well as the latest from the genre!

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
