Good evening, it's Monday, May 27th, Memorial Day 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In New Haven, at Café Nine, they bring you Sarah Louise and Tongue Depressor tonight (Tuesday). Cafe Nine's brings you a Words & Music event on Wednesday.  Thursday Cafe Nine headlines Tav Falco’s Panther Burns, appearing with Killer Kin. Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour set features Acoustic Soup with Al Raebuck and Steve Blanchard, followed by the late show with Mighty Tortuga, Carbon Based, Jonas, and more. Saturday’s weekly Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by Portrait Party, Mandala, Glambat, and more. The Sunday Matinée is a special Songwriter Series with Mark Mirando, Marc Douglas Berardo, and Richard Neal, and the late show features Boy Howdy & The Vomitorium All-Stars.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday nights. Wednesday’s weekly Community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday with special guests. You can catch Soul Tsunami with Sonia Morant on Friday night, and on Saturday they bring you the Amanda Fish Band with roots rock and soul. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The State House in New Haven has got neo soul, psych pop, and more on tonight/Tuesday with Bels Atlas, and The Art of Huckleberry. Get down with Haitian on Wednesday with Haiti's RAM, appearing with Dr. Caterwaul’s. KITKA, a Swedish electronic pop duo, make their Elm City debut on Thursday, performing with T-Wreck and Underwear. Goodnight Moonshine with special guest Letitia VanSant take the stage on Friday, and they’ve got a Champions League Final event Saturday afternoon, followed by Indie night with Ports of Spain, The Right Offs, and more. The Russell Library in Middletown sponsors a Job and Career workshop  this evening / Tuesday featuring Dr. Marcia LaReau with Part I of Forward Motion Negotiation. There’s also a session on Microsoft Excel: Introduction to Formulas and Functions and The Mystery Book Discussion group meets to explore “A Fatal Grace,” by Louise Penny.    Scrabble Wednesday is on the books at 5 pm, tomorrow and will be followed by a meeting of the Connecticut Poetry Society, and a Summer Teen Volunteer Orientation. Russell library hosts a community presentation on Thursday by Dr. Ruth Potee on Adolescent Substance Abuse and the Developing Brain. There are more Teen Volunteer Orientations on Saturday, and in the afternoon you can enjoy the next session of their Jazz Up Close series with vibraphonist and composer Joe Locke and his trio. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the eighth annual Middletown Music Festival happens this Friday through Sunday, co-sponsored by Middlesex Community College and taking place right on their campus. Enjoy the music, along with craft beer tasting, vendors, food, and more. The Recreation Division hosts a free Nature Walk and Scavenger Hunt for families Saturday morning at Crystal Lake. On Saturday night, Slingshot Dakota, Tier, and Perennial are at the MAC 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op. The GM Chorale brings its new concert, Alchemy: Come to the Music, to First Church in Glastonbury on Saturday, and to the United Congregational Church in Tolland on Sunday. Manic Presents is at the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk on Friday with The Musical Box: A Genesis Extravaganza. Or, you can catch Frank Iero and The Future Violents at the Space Ballroom in Hamden, appearing with Reggie and the Full Effect. On Saturday, they’re at the College Street Music Hall with India.Arie: The Worthy Tour, and Javier Colon. Here in Middletown, at the Buttonwood Tree on Friday, you can catch the dumpster-folk duo, The Rough & Tumble. The wrap up the week on Saturday with solo jazz piano performed by David Eberly. www.buttonwood.org



Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you electric guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen on Friday. On Saturday, it’s Tusk – the Ultimate Tribute to Fleetwood Mac. There’s fusion and Indian classical on Sunday with Bollywood Gharana. www.infinityhall.com

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “The Serengeti Rules,” a nature documentary about how to heal ecosystems, and “Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blanché,” a film detailing the life of the first female filmmaker. Also continuing is “Walking on Water,” a documentary about Christo’s latest art installation atop Italy’s Lake Iseo.  Friday’s opening is “The Biggest Little Farm,” a documentary about a California couple’s restoration of a 200-acre farm. The 32nd Annual LGBTQ Film Festival offering on Saturday is a selection of eight shorts about young people coming out. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford the run of “War and Peace, Part 2,” a 1965 Russian production of the Tolstoy’s classic. From 6-8pm stay tuned for Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill for an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. On tonight’s show, master guitarist, Glen Roth stops the studio!

From 8-9pm, Its Voice of the City with J-Cherry for an hour of live and local arts, culture, and politics.

from 3-4am weeknights this summer, WESU will be rebroadcasting our noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
