Thurs 5-9-19 Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, May 9th, 2019. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown at The Buttonwood Tree, you can hear pedal steel guitar and more tonight with singer/songwriters Steve Dedman and Peter Lehndorff. The Coconuts! return to the stage on Friday with music, fun, and special guest Washboard Slim. Come one, come all on Saturday afternoon to catch the Sunny Train Interactive Family Music Show. Saturday evening’s headliners are Al Copley with Fran Dance. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at CafĂ© Nine tonight, they headline The Drawbar, appearing with Little Silver. Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte, followed by the late show with Nekromantix, Rezurex, and The Braniax.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, followed by Day 1 of the Elm City folk Festival in the evening. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts The Friends Book Sale, happening Friday and Saturday, and there’s Mindfuness Meditation on Saturday morning. Enjoy bagels on Saturday morning at another One Book on the Riverbend event, with a discussion of “Educated” by Tara Westover. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, Liviu’s Invitational comes your way with special guests. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown sponsors free events this week, including the Annual Organ Romp tonight at Memorial Chapel, and on Saturday, there’s a Reception for the Senior Thesis Showcase at the Zilkha Gallery. Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that Adult Mom, Long Neck, Two Headed Girl, and more are at the Mac 650 Gallery and Artist Co-Op tonight. On Friday, it’s Field Medic, Another Michael, and The Knife Kickers at the Mac. Manic Presents hosts events at The Space Ballroom in Hamden, including Ghost Light tonight, featuring Holly Bowling and Raina Mullen. Friday’s bill has Bad Bad Hats, Boyscott, and Similar Kind. On Saturday, they bring you Dub Trio, the Balkun Brothers, and Polluter, and on Sunday they headline Damien Jurado, appearing with Anna St. Louis. At the College Street Music Hall, they bring you Turnover, Turnstile, Reptaliens, and Illusion on Thursday. At the Arch Street Tavern in Hartford tonight, they bring you Harsh Armadillo and Erica T Bryan The New Mosaic on Friday. On Saturday, they feature TherabeaT. The Friday Night Flavor series at the Hartford Flavor Company brings you Glambat and Lil Sluggers this week, and they host a Mother’s Day Floral Workshop on Saturday morning. The Cedar Hill Cemetery hosts its annual Bird Walk on Saturday with Jay Kaplan from the Roaring Brook Nature Center. It’s Second Saturdays for Families this week at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Amazing Grace,” an Aretha Franklin documentary with a never-before-seen performance of the anthem from 1972, and “Rafiki,” a breakthrough Kenyan film about lesbian love, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Hail Satan?” a documentary about the Satanic Temple. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford holds a one-night showing of “Giant Little Ones,” a film about gender fluidity, on Thursday. On Friday they open a weekend run of Tim Burton’s live action film, “Dumbo.” Sunday’s opening is “Diane,” featuring Mary Kay Place as a rural Massachusetts woman who finds purpose in serving others. Their Opera on Screen event on Sunday features the Royal Opera House production of  Verdi’s “La Forza del Distino.” Full details and screening times will be at http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the Jive, stay tuned for Homegrown with Robbie DeRosa. Homegrown is the award winning (Best Radio Program 2016 Hartford Magazine/CT NOW) Connecticut Connected Music Show-playing Connecticut connected artists of multiple genres. Often treating the listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, the show also provides information about live shows in the area.

From 6:30-8pm, catch Imagine with Karen Stein - Peace through music! Listen to the best music from around the world and around the block!

From 8:00-9:30pm, it’s Evening Jazz with Bill Denert. A broad range of swing, be bop and avante garde with a sprinkling of new releases. "Hearing is the best experience"

Following Evening Jazz from 9:30-10pm is (2, 4) In the Middle with Peanut and Lemon. A show for eavesdroppers and erroneously hopeful mind-readers alike! Tune in to conversations with the voices of those you walk past and live among.

From 10-11pm, it’s The American Empire with Yours Truly, Tootse Mutant: an exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

11-midnight, DJ Goosegg brings you (2, 4) The Holland Tunnel: Hidden gems and sleeper hits from New York and New Jersey artists, new and old.

From midnight-1am, catch (2, 4) Butter Fingers with Sam. Dropping funky tunes, one groovy slip at a time.

After Butterfingers until 2am is (2, 4) The Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson - Music from a variety of modern and contemporary film composers and soundtracks from
independent films

From 2-3am, tune in for (2, 4) WTF! (What the Funk) with DJ Jagged Little Thrill and DJ Amoroso, Exploring George Clinton’s concept of “the Funk,” as it appears across genres and generations.

From 3-4am, it’s The Hour of Slack. Reverend Ivan Stang presents his own commentary, along with recorded material from all SubGenius radio and stage shows, bands, ranters, media barrage collage artists, and selections from the indie audio underground created by various SubGenii and others

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Editionfrom NPR.
