Tuesday 10-24-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday October 24th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's going on in our area this week:

At the Russell Library in Middletown, this evening, they present The Witches Speak: Poems of Salem Village and 17th Century Scotland. Their World War I discussion series continues each Wednesday through the month. Veterans, families, and the public are invited to join at the Middletown Senior Center at 10 am, or at 7 pm at the library. Thursday’s workshop is Smart Searching: Internet Research, Fact Checking, and Staying Safe. There’s Adult Coloring for Stress Reduction on Friday morning, and Yoga in the Courtyard on Saturday. Performance 20/20, (U-) Hartt’s Honor Chamber Music Program, presents a free concert tonight/Tuesday at 8 pm at the Fuller Music Building on the University of Hartford Campus. www.harttweb.hartford/edu 

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, it’s a Pre-Halloween show featuring Torque and Weird Hero. On Wednesday it’s another evening of Words & Music. Thursday you can enjoy Health & Beauty, Famous Laughs, Lea, and more. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Let Loose Band, and their Friday night party with costumes, prizes and more benefits the ACLU. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the late show headlines Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Larry Kirwan, followed by a late show with Surf Squad and Surfalicious Dudes.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight and every Tuesday, you can see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday's community blues jam session features Tim McDonald, this week. Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational at Sally’s. On Friday its blues-based rock ‘n’ roll with Mambo Sons. They headline Cruz Machine on Saturday, and on Sunday it’s a special afternoon show with American/Israeli singer/songwriter Lazer Lloyd. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Tonight, Cherry St. Station in Wallingford offer a night of loud music with, The Mostly Dead, and more. On Thursday, it’s a NIHIL Kickoff Tour with City of Iron, Slave State, and Ore Miner. The Connecticut Science Center hosts a discussion, Conscious Artificial Intelligence? with Dr. Susan Schneider on Thursday at 6 pm at their Hartford location. Details at www.ctsciencecenter.org

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on Thursday you can catch “Ageless”, a New Mature Dance Party on the lily pad stage. On the Toad’s main stage Thursday night you can catch “Live Dead ’69” an all star band with members of The Dead, Rat Dog, The New Riders, and more!   On Friday at Toad’s they’ve got Horror Rockers – “GWAR” alongside Ghoul, Doyle, and U.S. Bastards. www.toadsplace.com

Infinity Hall in Hartford brings story to the stage with Speak Up Storytelling on Thursday, presenting “Secrets.” Its country and pop on Friday with Mary Chapin Carpenter. On Saturday, the tribute band Eaglemania performs. On Sunday night you can catch The Slambovian Circus of Dreams’ Halloween Costume Ball. Details at www.infinityhall.com  

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts an opening reception this Friday at 5 pm for UP IN ARMS, a multimedia group exhibition at Zilkha Gallery exploring the social issues of gun ownership. Friday, the Grammy Award-winning vocal project Roomful of Teeth comes to Crowell Concert Hall. Friday night, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown headlines The Painters. On Saturday morning it’s the weekly Aligned With Source Workshop, followed by a Teen Open Mic at 3 pm. Saturday evening brings the Dr. Steve Band Halloween Show to the Buttonwood for a night of fun with games and prizes. On Sunday it’s a free CD Release Party for Time of Day and the Dave Kopperman Band at The buttonwood Tree. The Hearing Voices network meets on Monday mornings at 10:30. www.buttonwood.org

The Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford hosts a Hallowed History Lantern Tour Friday in Hartford.

The Middletown International Film Festival continues on tonight/Tuesday with a screening of “Rams,” an Icelandic film about two estranged brothers who reunite over animals. It’s at Chapman Hall on the Middlesex Community College campus. Details at www.russelllibrary.org


Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Loving Vincent,” a painted animation about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, and “Tulip Fever,” about an orphan in an unhappy marriage in 17th Century Amsterdam. Tonight and tomorrow, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of a restored version of Luis Buñuel’s French classic, “Diary of a Chambermaid”. German director Peter Kahane will be in the house on Thursday for a one-time screening of “The Architects,” a portrait of life in Communist East Berlin. On Friday they open “Logan Lucky,” about small-town West Virginia thieves. Enjoy “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” for a late Friday show. At Midnight, it’s Yours Truly with DJ Balsamic and DJ Megnanimous

From 1-2am soup sounds with joseph features home recordings, lo-fi, concerts, field recordings, and esoterica.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am

at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica 

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
