Monday 10-02-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Monday October 2nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow, a chat with US Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro about her new book The Least Among Us: Waging the Battle for the Vulnerable. Can't listen live? I'll  also post there the schedule of her three stops along her book tour this week -- the first on Thurs at the Wesleyan/RJ Julia Bookstore on Main St., in Middletown; the next on Friday at the Lagrua Center on Water Street in Stonington, and then on Saturday at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Waterbury.

At the Mac650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown, you can catch Jacket Thor, Quiet Giant, and more tonight starting at 6 pm. They’ve got The French Connection on Thursday, and a Jared Knapik Release Show on Saturday with NYR, In Response, and more. www.facebook.com/mac650gallery/

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you its weekly Open Mic and Moments of Gratitude hosted by Rob and Terry tonight. There’s empowering yoga on Tuesday afternoon, with Laughter Yoga in the evening. On Thursday evening it’s Bob Gotta’s Acoustic Open Mic. Story city Troupe takes the stage on Friday. On Saturday morning they host the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening it’s a double bill with guitarists/composers Hiroya Tsukamoto and Dana Merritt, who bring along story-telling and poetry too. On Sunday afternoon it’s more stories from NEAR and Far Storytellers with Jim Harriman and Carolyn Stearns, including an Open Mic session. The Hearing Voices network meets on Monday mornings at 10:30. The month-long Art Show opens on Thursday, featuring the work of Bonnie Byrne LeMay.  http://buttonwood.org/

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine tonight, they celebrate Manic Mondays with Caroline Rose, Daphne Lee Martin, and Lys Guillorn. On Tuesday it’s Woody Pines, and An Historic. Wednesday’s bill headlines Trashcan Sinatras with the All Night Acoustic Tour 2017. On Thursday they bring you Viva Le Vos, and Dr. Caterwaul’s Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps. Friday’s Happy Hour has Snake Hill Blues, followed later by an Opening Reception for Katro Storm’s new exhibition, “Commissions,” and music with the George Baker Band. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show has The Real Kids, Daddy Long Legs, and Jacques Le Coque. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Wild Ponies and Anne Marie Menta, followed by a late show with Grace: Tribute to Jeff Buckley.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays today with Brian Simontacchi and The Vibe Tribe. Every Tuesday, see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday's community blues jam session features Ed Bradley this week. At the Russell Library in Middletown, there’s a Tobacco Cessation Workshop on Tuesday morning, and In the evening, the Social Justice Book Group will discuss “The Hate U Give,” by Angie Thomas. On Wednesday they sponsor World War I and America: A Centennial Discussion Series.  You can hear poetry Friday night as they present Laureates of Connecticut. Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts severa; book signi1ng events this week. You can meet Vanessa Grigoriadis on Tuesday at 7 pm, presenting her book “Blurred Lines: Rethinking Sex, Power & Consent on Campus.” On Wednesday, it’s stage designer David Hays with “Setting the Stage.” On Thursday, meet Connecticut’s long-time Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro with her new book “The Least Among Us: Waging the Battle for the Vulnerable.”  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents brings Spafford and their 2017 Fall Tour to The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden on Wednesday. They’ve got Pinback and Savak at The Ballroon on Thursday, and Metz and Slow Death on Saturday. At Bar in New Haven, they bring you The PigPen Theatre Co and David Luning on Wednesday. Wesleyan University’s Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life presents Light of the Blind, a series of workshops, colloquia, and concert performances this Thursday through Saturday at various campus locations. The series highlights the healing power of music in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and offers a forum for conversations between the American and Vietnamese-American communities. The series highlight is a concert of Xam Street Music on Saturday in Crowell Concert Hall. The Center for the Arts sponsors Abraham.In.Motion, returning to premier their new dance work, Dearest Home, on Friday and Saturday at CFA Theater. The WESU Fall Community Record Fair happens this Sunday October 8th from 11am - 4pm at Wesleyan’s Fayerweather-Beckham Hall, 55 Wyllys Ave Middletown, CT 06457.
The event features dozens of record dealers from across the northeast, selling tens of thousands of new & used records CDs, cassettes, music memorabilia & more. Plus there will be WESU gear for sale and as always.... WESU DJs will be spinning vinyl sets, all day long! It is free to attend but for $5, early birds can gain admission between 10-11am and beat the crowd. WESU Community Record Fairs are biennial fundraising events that WESU depends on to help pay the bills.  We hope to see you there! Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. The Middletown International Film Series opens this week with a screening of “The Saver” on Tuesday at 7 pm at the Russell Library. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals, and “School Life,” a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. Also continuing is “Logan Lucky,” about brothers who plan a robbery at a legendary motor speedway. They all run through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Nile Hilton Incident,” an Egyptian movie about a murder in Cairo, and “Walk With Me,” a peek inside the Zen Buddhist monastery of Thich Naht Hahn. “Ex Libris: New York Public Library,” opens Sunday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Dunkirk,” about Allied forces trapped by the Germans in WWII, through the week. and at 3am M-Th this Fall season on WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica 

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
