Tuesday 10-17-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday October 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown offers Laughter Yoga and a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing this evening. Friday night, you can enjoy the George Washington Carver Project with Avery Sharpe & Kris Allen, an original musical piece to honor the great scientist. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening you can catch an acoustic folk pop show with The Kennedys. On Sunday at 3 there’s a reception for the current art exhibition by contemporary impressionist painter Bonnie Byrne LeMan. In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, Tonight’s bill features Dead Rider, Timeghost, and more. They’ve got an early show on Wednesday with Goodnight Moonshine, followed by evening fare with Avmus, Neuropora, Tick Hive, and Parlay Droner. On Thursday you can enjoy Jon Langford’s Four Lost Souls, and The Meadows Brothers. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Buttondowns, followed by a late show with Luke Elliot and Danny Henry. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the late show headlines Ed Cherry. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, every Tuesday, you can see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday's community blues jam session features Tommy Whalen this week. On Thursday it’s multipercussionist Ed Mann w/ the Other Orchestra.Enjoy hip hop, reggae, dub, and soul on Friday with The Alchemystics. On Saturday, Infinity Hall in Hartford hosts another Backyard Music Series, with funky blues and jam rock performed by Creamery Station, Eggy, and The Mushroom Cloud.  Enjoy blues, gospel and more on Sunday with Melvin Seals and JGB (Jerry Garcia Band). Thursday night, Kathy Matthea’s “Acostic Living Room” Tour stops by Infinity Norfolks, Saturday Albert Cummings takes the infinity Hall Norfolk stage. www.infinityhall.com

The University of Hartford Chamber Music Ensemble presents free a concerttonight (Tuesday) at 7 pm at the Millard Auditorium on their Hartford campus. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, you can partake in an Origami workshop this evening. Their World War I discussion series continues each Wednesday through the month. Veterans, families, and the public are invited to join at the Middletown Senior Center at 10 am, or at 7 pm at the library. The Middlesex Historical Society hosts Robert Hubbard Wednesday night who will speak on the Revolutionary War hero Israel Putnam. On Saturday the Karkowska Sisters Duo performs with chamber music, stories, and comedy. The Historic Sewing Circle will be creating historical garments in the lobby Sunday from 1-4 pm. Manic Presents brings “Grails” and “Landing” to The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden on tonight (Tuesday). Tomorrow/ Wednesday, it’s Blind Pilot and Charlie Cunningham, also at The Ballroom. On Friday they’ve got The Front Bottoms, Basement, and Bad Bad Hats at The College Street Music Hall in New Haven. Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts several book signing events this week. Tonight (Tuesday), you can meet Sophronia Scott who’ll be presenting her new novel, “Unforgivable Love.” Tomorrow/Wednesday it’s award-winning psychologist Dr. John Bargh with “Before You Know It.” There’s also a skeleton-themed Maker Lab for kids on Wednesday. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts sponsors a graduate recital by Dave Scanlon at The Russell House tonight/Tuesday at 8 pm. On Thursday, there’s an Introduction to Songwork at World Music Hall in conjunction with the Judaica project at 4:40, followed at 8 pm by the Judaica Lecture, Performance, and Video Screenings at the Ring Family Hall. YWCA celebrates its Week Without Violence with a Community Matters conversation this Wednesday at 6 pm at their Hartford location. The featured speaker is Dr. Dorothy Martin-Neville, and there’s a book signing and presentation with Susan M Omilian who presents her new work, “Awaken: The Awakening of the Human Spirit on a Healing Journey.” State Troubadour Kate Callahan will perform. The Middletown International Film Festival continues tonight/Tuesday with a screening of “The Salesman,” an Iranian film about a woman’s search for her assailant. It’s at the Wesleyan Center for Film Studies. Details at www.russelllibrary.org


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Wind River,” a thriller about a murder on a Native American reservation, and “Lucky,” about the spiritual journey of a 90-year-old atheist, through Thursday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Brigsby Bear,” a dark comedy about a TV bear, through Thursday . “Wind River” will be screened on Saturday and Sunday, a story of a death in the Wyoming tundra. The Middletown International Film Series opens this week with a screening of “The Saver” tonight (Tuesday) at 7 pm at the Russell Library. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals, and “School Life,” a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. Also continuing is “Logan Lucky,” about brothers who plan a robbery at a legendary motor speedway. They all run through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Nile Hilton Incident,” an Egyptian movie about a murder in Cairo, and “Walk With Me,” a peek inside the Zen Buddhist monastery of Thich Naht Hahn. “Ex Libris: New York Public Library,” opens Sunday. Right after the jive at Five stay tuned for Spilled Milk with Charlotte offering assorted sounds right off the bedtime stories shelf!

From 6-8pm tonight,  it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. Tonight, Connecticut guitarist extraordinaire, Dana Merritt will be live in the studio with Bill.

At 8pm, The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry offers a weekly dose of live and local Connecticut arts and music.

From 9-10pm it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10pm it’s Wes Sports and Beyond with DJ Steven featuring Sports Talk and interviews.
From 11-midnight stay tuned for Dumpster Dive with DJ Smelly featuring punk, art pop and D.I.Y coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous
From 1-2am soup sounds with joseph features home recordings, lo-fi, concerts, field recordings, and esoterica.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am
at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
