Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday October 5th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's going on in our area this week:

Tonight at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you Bob Gotta’s Acoustic Open Mic. Story city Troupe takes the stage on Friday. On Saturday morning they host the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening it’s a double bill with guitarists/composers Hiroya Tsukamoto and Dana Merritt, who bring along story-telling and poetry too. On Sunday afternoon it’s more stories from NEAR and Far Storytellers with Jim Harriman and Carolyn Stearns, including an Open Mic session. The Hearing Voices network meets on Monday mornings at 10:30. The month-long Art Show opens on Thursday, featuring the work of Bonnie Byrne LeMay.  http://buttonwood.org/

At the Russell Library in Middletown,   You can hear poetry Friday night as they present Laureates of Connecticut. Starting this month, the library once again offers Sunday hours from 1-4 pm. Check the website for details these and more ongoing events for all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine tonight Viva Le Vos, and Dr. Caterwaul’s Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps. Friday’s Happy Hour has Snake Hill Blues, followed later by an Opening Reception for Katro Storm’s new exhibition, “Commissions,” and music with the George Baker Band. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show has The Real Kids, Daddy Long Legs, and Jacques Le Coque. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Wild Ponies and Anne Marie Menta, followed by a late show with Grace: Tribute to Jeff Buckley.  http://www.cafenine.com/

Manic Presents brings  They’ve got Pinback and Savak at The Ballroon on Thursday, and Metz and Slow Death on Saturday. At Bar in New Haven, Manic Presents offers The PigPen Theatre Co and David Luning on tomorrow/Wednesday. Wesleyan University’s Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life presents Light of the Blind, a series of workshops, colloquia, and concert performances this week, Thursday through Saturday at various campus locations. The series highlights the healing power of music in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and offers a forum for conversations between the American and Vietnamese-American communities. The series highlight is a concert of Xam Street Music on Saturday in Crowell Concert Hall. The Center for the Arts sponsors Abraham.In.Motion, returning to premier their new dance work, Dearest Home, on Friday and Saturday at CFA Theater. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings contemporary jazz your way on Thursday with The Rippingtons.  On Friday it’s The Spirit of Johnny Cash featuring Harold Ford at Infinity Hartford and Saturday, it’s country rock with The Firefalls. At Infinity Norfolk you can catch An Evening with Chris Robinson Brotherhood on Thursday night. Friday, it’s the David Bromberg Quintet at Infinity Norfolk and Saturday they’ve got Leo Kotke on stage.   www.infinityhall.com

The Harvest Supper, a community meal with music and auctions to benefit the Hands On Hartford food and nutrition assistance services, happens this Thursday. Details at www.handsonhartford.org

Cherry St. Station in Wallingford features Bathhouse Betty, Goat Herder, and more this Friday. On Saturday it’s the return of Damn Broads!, featuring The Deacons, Productive Member, and more all-female bands. On Sunday they bring you Kill Your Idols, Reason To Fight, and more. Middletown’s Recreation Division invites you to an outdoor hike at Higby Mountain this Saturday from 10 am to 1:30 pm. Due to the difficulty of the terrain, children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. E-mail Beth@HealingNatureCT.com for details and registration.

The annual Night Fall celebration takes place this Saturday from 2 to 9 pm at Bushnell Park in Hartford. It features artists, performers, and more providing enjoyment and fun for the entire family. www.bushnellpark.org

The WESU Fall Community Record Fair happens this Sunday October 8th from 11am - 4pm at Wesleyan’s Fayerweather-Beckham Hall, 55 Wyllys Ave Middletown, CT 06457. The event features dozens of record dealers from across the northeast, selling tens of thousands of new & used records CDs, cassettes, music memorabilia & more. Plus there will be WESU gear for sale and as always.... WESU DJs will be spinning vinyl sets, all day long! It is free to attend but for $5, early birds can gain admission between 10-11am and beat the crowd. WESU Community Record Fairs are biennial fundraising events that WESU depends on to help pay the bills.  We hope to see you there! Connecticut’s Farmers Markets are still in session. Enjoy home-grown goods and support local growers. Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Cromwell’s market is on Fridays 4-7 pm; and Glastonbury’s market happens Wednesdays 4-7 pm, find more at www.ctnofa.org

Middletown's WESTFIELD COMMUNITY CARNIVAL kicks off Thursday and runs through Sunday.  Located behind the Westfield Fire Department on Smith st,  The FREE carnival offers family fun and musical entertainment with rides and games, craft and food vendors, and musical entertainment by CJ West and The Downtown Train, Prelude band, and the Middletown Symphonic band. www.WestfieldCarnival.com 


This weekend also brings the PORTLAND AGRICULTURAL FAIR, which runs Friday through Sunday on the Exchange Club Grounds just over the river from Middletown on Rt.17A. Highlights include Truck and tractor pulls with a mud ditch run as well as animal husbandry and other agricultural exhibits and a music stage and a fireworks display Sat night! Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals, and “School Life,” a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. Also continuing is “Logan Lucky,” about brothers who plan a robbery at a legendary motor speedway. They all run through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Nile Hilton Incident,” an Egyptian movie about a murder in Cairo, and “Walk With Me,” a peek inside the Zen Buddhist monastery of Thich Naht Hahn. “Ex Libris: New York Public Library,” opens Sunday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Dunkirk,” about Allied forces trapped by the Germans in WWII, through the week. Now, here’s a rundown of WESU evening programming tonight! 

Right after the Jive stick around for Homegrown, with Rob DeRosa the award winning  Music Show-playing Connecticut connected artists often treating the listeners to pre-release material and in studio interviews with artists, the show also provides information about live shows in the area.

At 6:30 stay tuned for Imagine with Karen Stein, offering Peace through music! Listen to the best music from around the world and around the block!

From 8:00-9:30pm stick and stay with WESU for Evening Jazz with Bill Denert, providing A broad range of swing, be bop and avante garde with a sprinkling of new releases. "Hearing is the best experience"

At 9:30 its Crispix with Chris From indie rock to folk to electronic and more, Chris picks whatever he's feeling this week to share with you.

From 11-midnight it’s The American Empire with, Tootse Mutant offering an exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

From midnight-1am it’s Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks'n'Socks and MC McGee traveling through the history of jazz by highlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

Stay tuned from 1-2am for Fake News with DJ Alias and DJ Nick at Night who offer An irreverent take on political punditry, provided by two guys who love the sound of their own voices.

From 2-3am it’s the Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson with a focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.


From 3-4am it’s Democracy Now! from Pacifica. 

At 45am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
