Tuesday 10-3-17 Jive

Good evening, it's Tuesday October 3rd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's going on in our area this week:
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown brings you Laughter Yoga this evening. On Thursday evening it’s Bob Gotta’s Acoustic Open Mic. Story city Troupe takes the stage on Friday. On Saturday morning they host the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening it’s a double bill with guitarists/composers Hiroya Tsukamoto and Dana Merritt, who bring along story-telling and poetry too. On Sunday afternoon it’s more stories from NEAR and Far Storytellers with Jim Harriman and Carolyn Stearns, including an Open Mic session. The Hearing Voices network meets on Monday mornings at 10:30. The month-long Art Show opens on Thursday, featuring the work of Bonnie Byrne LeMay.  http://buttonwood.org/

At the Russell Library in Middletown, this evening, the Social Justice Book Group will discuss “The Hate U Give,” by Angie Thomas. On Wednesday they sponsor World War I and America: A Centennial Discussion Series.  You can hear poetry Friday night as they present Laureates of Connecticut. In New Haven at CafĂ© Nine tonight, you can catch Woody Pines, and An Historic. Wednesday’s bill headlines Trashcan Sinatras with the All Night Acoustic Tour 2017. On Thursday they bring you Viva Le Vos, and Dr. Caterwaul’s Cadre of Clairvoyant Claptraps. Friday’s Happy Hour has Snake Hill Blues, followed later by an Opening Reception for Katro Storm’s new exhibition, “Commissions,” and music with the George Baker Band. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show has The Real Kids, Daddy Long Legs, and Jacques Le Coque. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Wild Ponies and Anne Marie Menta, followed by a late show with Grace: Tribute to Jeff Buckley.  http://www.cafenine.com/


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Every Tuesday, you can see Michael Palin's Other Orchestra get funky with their take on jazz, R&B, and soul classics. Wednesday's community blues jam session features Ed Bradley this week. This Friday, it’s guitarist/singer Nick Schnebelen. Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts several book signing events this week. You can meet Vanessa Grigoriadis tonight/Tuesday at 7 pm, presenting her book “Blurred Lines: Rethinking Sex, Power & Consent on Campus.” On Wednesday, it’s stage designer David Hays with “Setting the Stage.” On Thursday, meet Connecticut’s long-time Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro with her new book “The Least Among Us: Waging the Battle for the Vulnerable.”  www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

Manic Presents brings Spafford and their 2017 Fall Tour to The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden tomorrow/Wednesday night. They’ve got Pinback and Savak at The Ballroon on Thursday, and Metz and Slow Death on Saturday. At Bar in New Haven, Manic Presents offers The PigPen Theatre Co and David Luning on tomorrow/Wednesday. Wesleyan University’s Allbritton Center for the Study of Public Life presents Light of the Blind, a series of workshops, colloquia, and concert performances this week, Thursday through Saturday at various campus locations. The series highlights the healing power of music in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, and offers a forum for conversations between the American and Vietnamese-American communities. The series highlight is a concert of Xam Street Music on Saturday in Crowell Concert Hall. The Center for the Arts sponsors Abraham.In.Motion, returning to premier their new dance work, Dearest Home, on Friday and Saturday at CFA Theater. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings contemporary jazz your way on Thursday with The Rippingtons.  On Friday it’s The Spirit of Johnny Cash featuring Harold Ford at Infinity Hartford and Saturday, it’s country rock with The Firefalls. At Infinity Norfolk you can catch An Evening with Chris Robinson Brotherhood on Thursday night. Cherry St. Station in Wallingford features Bathhouse Betty, Goat Herder, and more this Friday. The annual Night Fall celebration takes place this Saturday from 2 to 9 pm at Bushnell Park in Hartford. It features artists, performers, and more providing enjoyment and fun for the entire family. www.bushnellpark.org

The WESU Fall Community Record Fair happens this Sunday October 8th from 11am - 4pm at Wesleyan’s Fayerweather-Beckham Hall, 55 Wyllys Ave Middletown, CT 06457. The event features dozens of record dealers from across the northeast, selling tens of thousands of new & used records CDs, cassettes, music memorabilia & more. Plus there will be WESU gear for sale and as always.... WESU DJs will be spinning vinyl sets, all day long! It is free to attend but for $5, early birds can gain admission between 10-11am and beat the crowd. WESU Community Record Fairs are biennial fundraising events that WESU depends on to help pay the bills.  We hope to see you there! Middletown’s long running market on the South Green is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm and Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10 am to 2 pm. Middletown's WESTFIELD COMMUNITY CARNIVAL kicks off THuirsday and runs through Sunday.  Located behind the Westfield Fire Department on Smith st,  The FREE carnival offers family fun and musical entertainment with rides and games, craft and food vendors, and musical entertainment by CJ West and The Downtown Train, Prelude band, and the Middletown Symphonic band. www.WestfieldCarnival.com 


This weekend also brings the PORTLAND AGRICULTURAL FAIR, which runs Friday through Sunday on the Exchange Club Grounds just over the river from Middletown on Rt.17A. Highlights include Truck and tractor pulls with a mud ditch run as well as animal husbandry and other agricultural exhibits and a music stage and a fireworks display Sat night! The Middletown International Film Series opens this week with a screening of “The Saver” tonight (Tuesday) at 7 pm at the Russell Library. The film explores the quest of an orphaned Canadian girl to become a millionaire. The series continues each Tuesday through the month. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run “Unleashed,” about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals, and “School Life,” a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. Also continuing is “Logan Lucky,” about brothers who plan a robbery at a legendary motor speedway. They all run through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Nile Hilton Incident,” an Egyptian movie about a murder in Cairo, and “Walk With Me,” a peek inside the Zen Buddhist monastery of Thich Naht Hahn. “Ex Libris: New York Public Library,” opens Sunday. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of “Dunkirk,” about Allied forces trapped by the Germans in WWII, through the week. Right after the jive at Five stay tuned for  for Spilled Milk with Charlotte offering assorted sounds right off the bedtime stories shelf!

From 6-8pm tonight,  it’s Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill offering an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. Tonight, Connecticut guitarist extraordinaire, Dana Merritt will be live in the studio with Bill.

At 8pm, The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry offers a weekly dose of live and local Connecticut arts and music.

From 9-10pm it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal

At 10pm it’s Wes Sports and Beyond with DJ Steven featuring Sports Talk and interviews.
From 11-midnight stay tuned for Dumpster Dive with DJ Smelly featuring punk, art pop and D.I.Y coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous
From 1-2am soup sounds with joseph features home recordings, lo-fi, concerts, field recordings, and esoterica.

Maximum Rock and Roll Radio takes over with an hour of loud rock and roll from 2-3am
at 3am M-Th this Fall season at WESU,  we'll rebroadcast the day's noon-time run of Democracy Now! from Pacifica

at 4am we bring you BBC's world report before we kick off our Tuesday morning programming with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
