Friday's Jive 09-29-17

Good afternoon, it's Friday, September 29th, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this weekend.
On Saturday morning The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown has the Aligned With Source Workshop, and in the evening you can enjoy Ameranouche, bringing you Gypsy Flamenco Swing. Details @ buttonwood.org

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts the 41st annual Navaratri Festival, a celebration of the music, dance, and artistry of India. Tonight is henna and chaat samplings, and music and dance at Crowell Hall. The festival winds up on Saturday with a Hindu ceremonial blessing ceremony and a final concert at Crowell Concert Hall. At Russell Library in Middletown, there’s Yoga in the Courtyard Saturday, and at 1 pm Sat. they host author/historian Marty Podskoch to discuss his new book, “Connecticut Civilian Conservation Corps Camps: Supervised by WWI Officers.” Don’t forget, it’s the final week to return overdue items with no penalty. New Haven’s Café Nine Friday Women In Song Happy Hour brings you Allison Farrell and CB Sheehan, followed later by a Puppet Cabaret with DJ Icebucket. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, and the late show is the Ideat Village Rock Lottery. The Sunday Buzz Matinee has The Vibrators with a 40th Anniversary Tour, and the late show features Sex Beat with DJ Kid Congo Powers. Details @ cafenine.com

At the Outer Space in Hamden tonight they’ve got The Russ Liquid Test and Marvel Years. It’s the Ballroom on Saturday with Rainer Maria, Mates of State, and Selector Dub Narcotic, or you can catch The Growlers and Baby Shakes at the College Street Music Hall. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight

Tonight at Infinity Hartford its indie rock and jazz fusion with Indian Ocean. Saturday’s headliner is Jonny Lang with blues, rock and gospel. On Sunday, it’s a social media and music festival tour with the first ever Digitour: Goodtimes. Details @ infinityhall.com

The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts holds a free Block Party this Saturday at their Hartford location. There’s music, food trucks, family events, salsa lessons, backstage tours, and more. Details @ bushnell.org

This Sunday afternoon The March for Education, to raise awareness and support for the children in our community, is happening in Middletown. There’s a parade from Macdonough Elementary School on Spring St. to Harbor Park. At Harbor Park there will be vendors and educational booths set up until 7pm. Details @

Farmers Markets are peaking now with most operating thru October: Middletown’s North End Farmers Market is on Friday’s from 10am to 2pm, also Middletown’s long running market on the South Green are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8am to 1pm. Cromwell’s market is on Fridays 4-7 pm; Durham, Thursdays 3-6 pm; and Glastonbury, Wednesdays 4-7pm. Details and full listings @ ctnofa.org

And, here's our rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the afternoon run of Unleashed, about an unexpected encounter with transformed animals. The late afternoon movie, Logan Lucky, is about a heist and stock car racing. Opening this evening is School Life, a documentary about the only primary-age boarding school in Ireland. On Sunday at 7:30pm, in a one-time only event, it’s John Le Carré – An Evening with George Smiley, the proceeds of which benefit Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders). Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the run of Detroit, a recreation of the 1967 Detroit riots. Sunday’s opens a one-week run of Dunkirk in 70 mm format, that focuses on the stories of resilience against overwhelming odds in the early stages of WWII. And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth expounding on that Wesleyan music scene.

And from 6:30-7pm catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood. 

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T - offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N following the premise that every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30pm until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

Staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
