Thurs 8-1-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, August 1st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

This evening, At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, you can catch Bob Gotta’s long running monthly Acoustic Open Mic. The Hearing Voices Network appears Friday afternoon, later Friday evening, the Story City Troupe works within the theme of, “An Ah-Ha Moment.” Eliot Lewis, independent artist and multi-instrumentalist, takes the Buttonwood Tree stage on Saturday. www.buttonwood.org
In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Thursday they headline L & E: The Duo and Ab-Sidian. Friday Café nine’s weekly 5pm Happy Hour set features Paddy & Coe. Friday night’s late show brings old school  hardcore troubadours Murphy's Law to the stage along with So Long Liberty. Saturday Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends this week. Saturday evening brings Tal National and Southwind Social Club to the stage. The Café nine Sunday Matinée welcomes The Furors, Lys Guillorn and Her Band, and Forest Harlow to the stage, and the Nine rounds out the weekend with The Dollyrots and The Pink Spiders on Sunday night. http://www.cafenine.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday nights. Ed Fast & Conga Bop take the Sally’s Stage Friday night with Afro Cuban inspired music, and on Saturday at Black-Eyed Sally’s you can catch Bobby T’s All Stars. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

On Saturday at The State House in New Haven, the 80s/90s dance party, Out Of Bounds pays tribute to The Cure and on Monday its open mic night hosted by Steve Rodgers, featuring Ron Anthony. www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, Off the Record Indie Night happens at Little River Restoratives tonight. The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open Friday and The Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival will be held Saturday with food, music, and more at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that, there's a nature walk on the Mattabesset River Trail on Saturday and the The Rockfall Foundation environmentalist community is holding a Crystal Lake hike and picnic. The Black-Rock Funk All-stars perform at La Boca restaurant Saturday night.
The Children’s Circus of Middletown will be performing its 31st annual summer show called (Almost) Anything Goes on Friday, August 2 at 5 pm at Macdonough School in Middletown.
  (Almost) Anything Goes ​ will be a production where anything can happen! Featuring over 160 performers ages 5-15, an 18-piece live band, and 40 staff, for an outdoor spectacle beyond description.

At Infinity Hall Hartford on Friday, the Carpenters are remembered with "We've Only Just Begun." At Infinity Norfolk, Pink Talking Fish performs the music of Pink Floyd, Talking Heads and Phish on Friday. www.infinityhall.com

Music On The River continues its free concert series held on the lawn of the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, next Monday, with Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez. The concerts start at 6:30. http://www.easthaddam.org/Music-on-the-River/

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still running “Pavarotti,” a documentary about the Voice, the Man, the Legend.  . Also continuing is “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship and family, and "Rojo,” an Argentinian crime thriller. On Thursday, they have a one-day screening of "Eye on Video: 2019 Film Showcase," a presentation of the work of 15 high schoolers from the Greater Hartford area who created original short films in just six weeks. On Friday, they open "Tel Aviv on Fire," about a intern on a Palestinian soap opera. Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford ends their run of "Paths of Glory". They present "Lolita" on Friday and Saturday, and "Barry Lyndon" starting on Sunday. From 1-2am its The Hour of Slack with Reverend Ivan Stang from the Church of the Subgenius

at 2am Modern Jazz Today offers music from today’s jazz improvisational makers, standard’s arrangers and original composers

from 3-4am weeknights this summer, we are broadcasting our noontime edition of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
