Good evening, it's Wednesday, August 14th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Today/Wednesday in Middletown, The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore hosts an evening of investigation with Joseph Theroux Alex.
The Russell Library hosts a workshop with The Bristol old Time Fiddle club on Weds and their Veterans writing workshop happens on Thursday evening.  www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight, you can catch  Crunk Witch along with Alethea, Zero Years, and Sketch Tha Cataclysm tonight/Wednesday.
Thursday DRINKDEEPLY AND BAG RADIO PRESENT a BACK TO SCHOOL FUNDRAISER FOR FAMILY CENTERED SERVICES of New Haven, bring a back pack! This Friday’s live Happy Hour music set is with ACOUSTIC SOUP (AL RAEBUCK & STEVE BLANCHARD).
Friday night’s late show Features Americana Rock and Rockabilly dude of legend, Deke Dickerson and Bloodshot Bill.
Café Nine Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Tony Dioguardi and friends this week. Saturday night’s main event features Hardcore Rock with Intercourse, Fashion Week, Lightkeeper, acid hands and more. Tonight/Wednesday the State House in New Haven welcomes DC Doom Rock pioneers, The Obsessed, fronted by Scott “Wino” Weinrich take the stage, along with SinisterHaze, BoneChurch, Goatherder. 
Midwest Punk band Off With Their Heads, plays at The Statehouse with Single Mothers, and the Lost Riots Friday night.
The State House invites you to their 1 Year Anniversary Celebration with neo-afrobeat group Underground System, future soul group Phat A$tronaut, and DJ Shaki! Saturday and Sunday bring 2 days of The Lip Gloss Crisis summer themed cabaret show the Sunday afternoon show is family friendly.  www.statehousepresents.com

Tonight/Wednesday brings Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesday to Arch Street Tavern. 
The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series continues on Thursday at noon with Joey Batts. Thursday, night Connecticut Historical Society, presents Conjunto Guajiba y Sharina “La reinita que canta” who will present jíbaro folk music, music from the rural countryside and mountains of Puerto Rico.
Free Movies in the Parks presents Dumbo, Thursday night at 8:00 in Keeney Park. Thursday Real Art Ways also hosts their monthly Creative Cocktail Hour. In addition to outdoor games, a fire pit and s’mores, This month’s creative cocktail hour will also feature Live Salsa music with Nelson Bello & Los Calientes. and exhibiting artist Binwanka (and WPKN DJ)  will be in the main gallery spinning the sounds in tandem with his video work.

CT State Troubadour, Nekita Waller performs at The Old Statehouse Farmers Market in Hartford Friday at noon. Friday night at Bushnell Park Free Movies in the Parks presents: Inside Out.   Saturday, from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm the Dragon Boat & Asian Festival returns to Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.  Saturday and Sunday Brings Minefair, a massive Minecraft-inspired experience, to The Ct Convention Center. www.hartford.com/events   

At Infinity Norfolk, tonight/Wednesday you can catch Tab Benoit. On Thursday, Walter Trout take the Infinity Norfolk stage. Friday night Robert Earl Keen Stops by Infinity Norfolk and Saturday they feature a Rolling Stones tribute band. John Mayall Performs at infinity Norfolk on Sunday. Thursday evening brings Shaking the Tree – Gong and Sound Meditation to The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown and the Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller happens there Friday at 12:30 pm.  Friday evening you can catch guitarist and vocalist, Waberi Jordan performing her unique style sculpted around jazz, blues, and soul. Saturday afternoon Brings the Teen open mic to the buttonwood and Saturday evening The Gibbonses a Texas Americana husband and wife duo take the stage. www.buttonwood.org

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford hosts Traverse the Abyss + The Muckrakers on Friday. Saturday brings Festival of the Dead II - EOTDs 15 year anniversary featuring  Nasty disaster A.D., Continuum, Xenosis, Bonestorm , Crossing Rubicon and many more loud rock bands..


Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is now offering 5 screenings per day of the documentary Maiden, through Thursday. Maiden is the inspirational story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes their spotlight on Stanley Kubrick’s films this week. Tonight they open run of Full Metal Jacket, which runs through Thursday. Friday they present an unrestored showing of 2001 a Space odyssey with no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits to recreates the cinematic event that audiences experienced fifty years ago.    http://www.cinestudio.org/

from 1-3am  Gospel Boogie with James Zurek offers secular exploration of up-tempo gospel music, 1945-1965.

 At 3am, this summer we'll be rebroadcasting the day's noon brodacst of Democracy Now! From Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
