Friday 8-2 Jive

Good evening, it's Friday, August 2nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, a progressive-minded radio show which for pretty much the rest of the summer season airs every Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

This evening, At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, you can catch  the Story City Troupe working within the theme of, “An Ah-Ha Moment.” Eliot Lewis, independent artist and multi-instrumentalist, takes the Buttonwood Tree stage tomorrow. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight's weekly 5pm Happy Hour set features Paddy & Coe. Tonight’s late show brings old school  hardcore troubadours Murphy's Law to the stage along with So Long Liberty. Tomorrow, Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends this week. Tomorrow evening brings Tal National and Southwind Social Club to the stage. The Café nine Sunday Matinée welcomes The Furors, Lys Guillorn and Her Band, and Forest Harlow to the stage, and the Nine rounds out the weekend with The Dollyrots and The Pink Spiders on Sunday night. http://www.cafenine.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Ed Fast & Conga Bop take the Sally’s Stage tonight with Afro Cuban inspired music, and tomorrow at Black-Eyed Sally’s you can catch Bobby T’s All Stars. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Tomorrow at The State House in New Haven, the 80s/90s dance party, Out Of Bounds, pays tribute to The Cure and on Monday its open mic night hosted by Steve Rodgers, featuring Ron Anthony. www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, the Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open tonight and The Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival will be held tomorrow with food, music, and more at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still running “Pavarotti,” a documentary about the Voice, the Man, the Legend.  . Also continuing is “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship and family, and "Rojo,” an Argentinian crime thriller. Tonight, they open "Tel Aviv on Fire," about a intern on a Palestinian soap opera. Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Tonight and tomorrow, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford  presents "Lolita" and "Barry Lyndon" starting on Sunday. Their National Theatre Live selection this week is the Royal Opera House performance of “Faust." Details and screening at http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the Jive, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10- Midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for Overdrive with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.
