Good evening, it's Wednesday, July 31st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, there's an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta Thursday evening. The Hearing Voices Network appears Friday afternoon, and that evening, the Story City Troupe takes on the theme, “An Ah-Ha Moment.” Eliot Lewis, independent artist and multi-instrumentalist, takes the stage on Saturday. www.buttonwood.org

Music On The River continues its free concert series held on the lawn of the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. Next Monday, it’s Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez. The concerts start at 6:30. http://www.easthaddam.org/Music-on-the-River/

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Words & Music performs this evening/Wednesday, and on Thursday they headline L & E: The Duo and Ab-Sidian. Friday’s Happy Hour features Paddy & Coe, and the late show’s got Murphy's Law and So Long Liberty. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by Tal National and Southwind Social Club that night. The Sunday Matinée brings The Furors, Lys Guillorn and Her Band, and Forest Harlow to the stage, and they round out the weekend with The Dollyrots and The Pink Spiders on Sunday night. http://www.cafenine.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday community blues jam featuring Tim McDonald, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. The State House in New Haven brings you avant-garde rock tonight/Wednesday with Horse Lords, with Editrix and Wess Meets West. On Saturday the 80s/90s dance party returns with Party Out Of Bounds – Cure Night and on Monday it's open mic night hosted by Steve Rodgers, featuring Ron Anthony. www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, the Connecticut Historical Society  explores the underground railroad with Family Adventure Days: Escape to Freedom Thursday.
The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series continues on Thursday at noon with Canyon, and it’s Off the Record Indie Night at Little River Restoratives later that night. The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open Friday and The Taste of the Caribbean & Jerk Festival will be held Saturday with food, music, and more at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza. On Sunday, it's the Taste of Hartford and Sea Tea Improv's all-ages comedy show. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check their website for free yoga and fitness classes, including bilingual offerings. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore's annual Where's Waldo Middletown Scavenger Hunt culminates today/Wednesday with a grand celebration at 6:30 pm.Waldo will make a guest appearance and pose for photos and sign autographs, and there will be coloring and activity sheets, ice cream, and maybe even a Waldo parade. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Russell Library in Middletown reminds you to take part in the Adult Summer Reading program to win a downtown Middletown gift card with the final drawing on Aug. 12th.  Scrabble Wednesday is on the calendar at 5 pm, the Fiddle Workshop continues at 6 pm. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that the Music at the Mansion series continues this evening/Wednesday at the Wadsworth mansion featuring the Middletown Symphonic Band. On Saturday, there's a nature walk on the Mattabesset River Trail and the The Rockfall Foundation environmentalist community is holding a Crystal Lake hike and picnic. At Infinity Hall Hartford you can hear electronica, jam, and soul this evening/Wednesday with Litz for free. On Friday, the Carpenters are remembered with "We've Only Just Begun." Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still running “Pavarotti,” a documentary about the Voice, the Man, the Legend, and “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” a documentary about the iconic author. Also continuing is “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship and family, and "Rojo,” an Argentinian crime thriller. On Thursday, they have a one-day screening of "Eye on Video: 2019 Film Showcase," a presentation of the work of 15 high schoolers from the Greater Hartford area who created original short films in just six weeks. On Friday, they open "Tel Aviv on Fire," about a intern on a Palestinian soap opera. Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

 Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is showing "Paths of Glory" on tonight/Wednesday and Thursday, "Lolita" on Friday and Saturday, and "Barry Lyndon" starting on Sunday. from 1-3am  Gospel Boogie with James Zurek offers secular exploration of up-tempo gospel music, 1945-1965.

 At 3am, this summer we'll be rebroadcasting the day's noon brodacst of Democracy Now! From Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
