Monday 8-19-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, August 19th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown hosts Laughter Yoga with Dawn followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing tomorrow. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets on Thursday evening, and on Friday the indie rock/power pop band Lucy’s Neighbor takes the stage. The Mary Ellen Longergan Jazz Trio will be in the house Saturday night. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays headlines Didi, appearing with Hellrazor, and SAP. On Tuesday, Zombii, Houston & The Dirty Rats, and El Escapado are on board, and they host a Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday with Dan Rice. They’ve got Wild Yawp, Daniprobably, and Fiction Kids on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features DW Ditty, and the late show brings you the jazz of Steve Davis. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, followed by a Grime, Grime Release Show with Jules Baxter, Sotorios, Googie, and much more. The State House in New Haven holds an Open Mic for artists tonight with Steve Rodgers, featuring Lighthouse. They’ve got Coming Out Swinging! On Friday with Murder Monday and West Rockers. It’s a Queen Moo Record Release on Sunday, along with performances by Old Self, Laura Laura, and Horror Movie Marathon. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, their Jazz Mondays session features the Behn Gillece Quartet. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam is hosted by Peter Byron, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. The 70’s Project takes you back to that decade on Friday night, and on Saturday it’s another performance by a regional favorite, the Mighty Soul Drivers. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The East Haddam Land Trust invites you to celebrate its 40th anniversary at the Goodspeed Opera House tonight starting at 6 pm. Enjoy an evening of music headlining “Musical Bridges,” along with jam sessions, food and refreshments, and more. www.ehlt.org

Back in Hartford, The Hartford Jazz Orchestra is at the Arch Street Tavern tonight. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to explore magic at the Family Adventure Days event, Magical Museums, on Tuesday and Thursday. They host historian Barbara Beeching on Wednesday at noon with her new book, “Hopes and Expectations: The Origins of the Black Middle Class in Hartford.” The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza brings you Keith Carini on Wednesday at noon, and it’s Karaoke Night at The Russell in the evening. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series continues on Thursday at noon with folk artist Steve Rodgers, and the Afro-Cuban band Cimafunk performs at Real Art Ways in the evening. Rick Spencer and Locomotive Shipwreck perform historical songs in the folk tradition at the Old State House Friday at noon. The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open Friday evening starting at 4 pm, and Pratt Street holds a Hip Hop for the Homeless at 5:30, featuring Bonzo, Sketch T.C, Joey Batts, and more. The Arch Street Tavern brings you Creamery Station and Fiction on Friday, and the psychedelic cowpunk band, Moon Matrix of the Lizard People, on Saturday. The Cedar Hill Cemetery sponsors a Mushroom Walk Saturday morning at 10 am, and West Indian Girls Rock holds an all-day white party, Blanc, in the evening at Heaven Skatepark. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness classes, including bilingual offerings. Manic Presents starts things off at the College Street Music Hall on Tuesday with Hot Tuna and Dave Mason. On Friday, it’s Comedy Bang Bang Live! With Scott Aukerman, Lauren Lapkus, and more. On Saturday they headline Nick Frandiani, appearing with Beach Avenue and Whatever We Are. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden, they feature Ex Hex and Frankie and the Witch Fingers on Tuesday. Mark Mulcahy takes the stage on Saturday, along with The Split Coils. On Sunday, it’s An Evening with Anthony Fantano of The Needle Drop. www.manicpresents.com

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore hosts Jessica Francis on Tuesday, presenting her novel, “Rules for Visiting.” Connecticut native Julia Tannenbaum will be there Wednesday with her new novel, “Changing Ways.” On Thursday you can meet Steve Rushin, who discusses his new memoir, “Nights in White Castle.” Enjoy a conversation on Sunday with Mindie Barnett and Beth Wilson Parentice presenting books about taking charge of your life. The Russell Library in Middletown has Scrabble Wednesday at 5 pm, followed by the ongoing Fiddle Workshop series. On Thursday, they continue the Jazz Up Close series with clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus and his quartet. Spend time with doers and crafters Friday morning at Make Time for Making. On Saturday morning they host the Ryan Woods Autism Foundation for a session on training parents in Individualized Education Plans for 2020. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office invites you to learn more about crystalline glazes at a Crystal Ball Workshop sponsored by Wesleyan Potters this Wednesday through Sunday. The Recreation Division holds a Home staging Seminar Wednesday at 7 pm. The Artists for World Peace Wall will be in Milford Wednesday through Sunday at the MAC Firehouse Gallery. The Brandon Terzakis Trio performs at Conspiracy on Friday evening. Infinity Hall Norfolk brings you another free show on Wednesday with psychedelic jam performed by the Travers Brothership. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Maiden,” a documentary of the first ever all-female crew to enter a round-the-world yacht race, and “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” through Thursday. Also continuing is “Mike Wallace Is Here,” an unflinching look at the legendary reporter. On Friday they open “Cold Case Hammarskjöd,” a film reexamining the plane crash that killed the UN leader in 1961, and “Jay Myself,” about the New York photographer Jay Maisel’s life in a Bowery bank building. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes its Stanley Kubrick series with the unrestored version of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” through Thursday. Hartford’s Free Movies in the Parks series continues on Wednesday with “Captain Marvel” at Dunkin’ Donuts park at 8 pm. The Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation holds its annual Movie Night on Thursday with “On Golden Pond,” starring Katherine Hepburn. On Friday, “Avengers: Infinity War” will be screened at the Mortensen Riverfront 8 pm, or you can see “Moana” in Colt Park. www.hartford.com/events/

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
