This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime
programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio
from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best
in free-form programming.
I'm
Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday
of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s
from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

this week:
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds the Anything Goes Open
Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight – Hosted by Ashley Hamel. Thursday
evening brings Shaking the Tree – Gong and Sound Meditation to The
Buttonwood. and the Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller happens
Friday at 12:30 pm. Friday evening you can catch guitarist and vocalist,
Waberi Jordan performing her unique style sculpted around jazz, blues, and
soul. Saturday afternoon Brings the Teen open mic to the buttonwood and
Saturday evening The Gibbonses a Texas Americana husband and wife duo take the

Tonight, East Haddam wraps up their Music on the River free
concert series held on the lawn of the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam.
Tonight, Atlanta's genre blending ensemble, Blair Crimmins and the Hookers has
brings their unique blend of Ragtime, Dixieland and Gypsy Jazz to the

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you GENTLEMAN
BRAWLERS along with Thabisa and Ro Godwynn. On Tuesday you can hear local indie
rock with MAMMA'S BOY, DONNIE ALEXZANDER. and NAMESAKE. Crunk Witch headlines a
bill featuring Alethea, Zero Years, and Sketch Tha Cataclysm Wednesday night.
Thursday DRINKDEEPLY AND BAG RADIO PRESENT a BACK TO SCHOOL FUNDRAISER FOR
FAMILY CENTERED SERVICES of New Haven, bring a back! This Friday’s live Happy
Hour music set is with ACOUSTIC SOUP (AL RAEBUCK & STEVE BLANCHARD). Friday
night’s late show Features Americana Rock and Rockabilly dude of legend, Deke
Dickerson and Bloodshot Bill. Café Nine Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam
session is with Tony Gioguardi and frinds this week. Saturday night’s main
event features Hardcore Rock with Intercourse, Fashion Week, Lightkeeper, acid
hands and more. The Sunday Matinée brings THE MANCHURIANS and DUST HAT Stage,
and they round out the weekend with Café Nine Blues Jam featuring George Lesiw,

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Tonight’s Jazz Monday
event features The MATT DECHAMPLAIN TRIO, and Michael Palin’s Other
Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday.
Wednesday’s community blues jam features GENE DONALDSON, and Liviu’s

Tonight, Steve Rodgers hosts an Open Mic Night at The State House
in New Haven featuring Daphne Lee Martin. DC Doom Rock pioneers fronted by

Goatherder. Midwest Punk band Off With Their Heads, plays at The
Statehouse with Single Mothers, and the Lost Riots Friday night. The State
House invites you to their 1 Year Anniversary Celebration with neo-afrobeat

Saturday and Sunday bring 2 days of The Lip Gloss Crisis summer themed cabaret

Back in Hartford, The Monday Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park
concludes tonight, featuring the Kris Jensen Ensemble with opening act the OGJB
Quartet. The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza features Dan Liaprini on
Wednesday at noon. Wednesday night brings Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesday to Arch
Street Tavern. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series continues on
Thursday at noon with Joey Batts. Thursday, night Connecticut Historical
Society, presents Conjunto Guajiba y Sharina “La reinita que canta”who will
present jíbaro music, rural folk music from the countryside and mountains of
Puerto Rico. Free Movies in the Parks presents Dumbo at 8:00 in Keeney Park. CT
State Troubadour, Nekita Waller performs at The Old Statehouse Farmers Market
in Hartford Friday at noon. Friday night at Bushnell Park Free Movies in the
Parks presents: Inside Out. Saturday, from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm the
Dragon Boat & Asian Festival returns to Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.
Saturday and Sunday Brings Minefair, a massive Minecraft-inspired experience,

CT State Troubadour, Nekita Waller performing classic soul, RnB, and original

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central
Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways is now showing Maiden, offering 5
screenings per day through Thursday. Maiden is the inspirational story of how
Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, became the skipper of the
first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989.

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes their
spotlight on Stanley Kubrick’s films this week. Tonight they end a run of Eyes
Shut, Tomorrow they open run of Full Metal Jacket, which runs through Thursday.

digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits to recreates the

Finally,
