Monday 8-12-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, August 12th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds the Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight – Hosted by Ashley Hamel. Thursday evening brings Shaking the Tree – Gong and Sound Meditation to The Buttonwood.  and the Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller happens Friday at 12:30 pm.  Friday evening you can catch guitarist and vocalist, Waberi Jordan performing her unique style sculpted around jazz, blues, and soul. Saturday afternoon Brings the Teen open mic to the buttonwood and Saturday evening The Gibbonses a Texas Americana husband and wife duo take the stage. www.buttonwood.org

Tonight, East Haddam wraps up their Music on the River free concert series held on the lawn of the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. Tonight, Atlanta's genre blending ensemble, Blair Crimmins and the Hookers has brings their unique blend of Ragtime, Dixieland and Gypsy Jazz to the stage.  The concerts start at 6:30. http://www.easthaddam.org/Music-on-the-River/ 

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you GENTLEMAN BRAWLERS along with Thabisa and Ro Godwynn. On Tuesday you can hear local indie rock with MAMMA'S BOY, DONNIE ALEXZANDER. and NAMESAKE. Crunk Witch headlines a bill featuring Alethea, Zero Years, and Sketch Tha Cataclysm Wednesday night. Thursday DRINKDEEPLY AND BAG RADIO PRESENT a BACK TO SCHOOL FUNDRAISER FOR FAMILY CENTERED SERVICES of New Haven, bring a back! This Friday’s live Happy Hour music set is with ACOUSTIC SOUP (AL RAEBUCK & STEVE BLANCHARD). Friday night’s late show Features Americana Rock and Rockabilly dude of legend, Deke Dickerson and Bloodshot Bill. Café Nine Weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Tony Gioguardi and frinds this week. Saturday night’s main event features Hardcore Rock with Intercourse, Fashion Week, Lightkeeper, acid hands and more. The Sunday Matinée brings THE MANCHURIANS and DUST HAT Stage, and they round out the weekend with Café Nine Blues Jam featuring George Lesiw, kicking off at 8:30. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Tonight’s Jazz Monday event features  The MATT DECHAMPLAIN TRIO, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s community blues jam features GENE DONALDSON, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. KAL DAVID + LAURI BONO & THE REAL DEAL come your way Friday night. Tonight, Steve Rodgers hosts an Open Mic Night at The State House in New Haven featuring Daphne Lee Martin. DC Doom Rock pioneers fronted by Scott “Wino” Weinrich take the stage, along with SinisterHaze, BoneChurch, Goatherder.  Midwest Punk band Off With Their Heads, plays at The Statehouse with Single Mothers, and the Lost Riots Friday night. The State House invites you to their 1 Year Anniversary Celebration with neo-afrobeat group Underground System, future soul group Phat A$tronaut, and DJ Shaki! Saturday and Sunday bring 2 days of The Lip Gloss Crisis summer themed cabaret show the Sunday afternoon show is family friendly.  www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, The Monday Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park concludes tonight, featuring the Kris Jensen Ensemble with opening act the OGJB Quartet. The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza features Dan Liaprini on Wednesday at noon. Wednesday night brings Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesday to Arch Street Tavern.  The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series continues on Thursday at noon with Joey Batts. Thursday, night Connecticut Historical Society, presents Conjunto Guajiba y Sharina “La reinita que canta”who will present jíbaro music, rural folk music from the countryside and mountains of Puerto Rico. Free Movies in the Parks presents Dumbo at 8:00 in Keeney Park. CT State Troubadour, Nekita Waller performs at The Old Statehouse Farmers Market in Hartford Friday at noon. Friday night at Bushnell Park Free Movies in the Parks presents: Inside Out.   Saturday, from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm the Dragon Boat & Asian Festival returns to Mortensen Riverfront Plaza.  Saturday and Sunday Brings Minefair, a massive Minecraft-inspired experience, to The Ct Convention Center. www.hartford.com/events

Tomorrow/Tues Manic Presents brings the The Queers, Dagwood, and The Redactions to The Space Ballroom in Hamden.  On Friday at the Space Ballroom, They’ve got Juice, Laini and the Wildfire, and Nikita sharing a bill.  PREMIER CONCERTS AND MANIC PRESENTS Max Frost and SWELLS at The Ballroom on Saturday. www.manicpresents.com

Tomorrow at Oddfellows Playhouse, Middletown Commission on the Arts and the Shoreline Arts Alliance present ArtsNet90 from 9 am - 10:30 am . ArtsNet90 is a bi-monthly arts networking meeting designed to bring artists and arts organizations together. RSVP by emailing office@shorelinearts.org. Tomorrow/Tues Evening The Middletown Summer Sounds Free Concert Series features CT State Troubadour, Nekita Waller performing classic soul, RnB, and original music at the Gazebo at Middletown’s South green.  Rain location is South Congregational Church. At Infinity Norfolk, on Wednesday you can catch Tab Benoit. On Thursday, Walter Trout take the Infinity Norfolk stage. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is now showing Maiden, offering 5 screenings per day through Thursday. Maiden is the inspirational story of how Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old cook on charter boats, became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race in 1989. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford concludes their spotlight on Stanley Kubrick’s films this week. Tonight they end a run of Eyes Shut, Tomorrow they open run of Full Metal Jacket, which runs through Thursday. Friday they present an unrestored showing of 2001 a Space odyssey with no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits to recreates the cinematic event that audiences experienced fifty years ago.    http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
