Monday 8-26-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, August 26. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown and streaming live at wesufm.org. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude with Jacob Wiseman tonight at 7. On Friday, the El Trash Combo performs acoustic Americana and blues rock, and on Saturday Robert Silverman/Bobo Lavorgna celebrate 50 years of friendship and musicianship with original and traditional jazz & blues music. The marine mammal art show of Don Sineti opens on Sunday. More information at www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you The Western Den, Minor Moon, and Lil Sluggers. On Tuesday they’ve got Ecce Shnak, Strawberry Cheesesteak, and Crystal Clear. On Wednesday, Words & Music, a monthly event full of local & touring musicians, writers, poets, and comedians, is on the stage. On Thursday, they have Gustaf, Ports of Spain, and SHY. Friday’s happy hour features Snake Hill Blues, and Friday night, Decent News, The 30th of February, Set Fire To The Hive, The Wavepeak, and A/8 are on the bill. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Billy Cofrances, and in the evening they bring you Jacques Le Coque, Eddie Golden III, and Tate and Sila. The Sunday Matinée has POSSM (Professors of Sweet Sweet Music), Podunk Throwbacks, Anthony Ailing, and they finish out the weekend with Shake 'N' Vibrate. http://www.cafenine.com/

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features Jocelyn Pleasant and The Lost Tribe tonight, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it’s the Community Blues Jam with Tim McDonald. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday, and on Friday they present The Redliners. The Russell Library in Middletown has a Social Security workshop on Tuesday. On Wednesday, there’s a census employment information session along with Scrabble Wednesday. Scrabble Wednesday continues, and on Thursday you can network with other job seekers with Bob Carlson and Christy Billings. The State House in New Haven holds an open mic session tonight hosted by Steve Rodgers featuring Anne Marie Menta. On Thursday, it’s the world premiere screening of Rock Lottery Documentary with live performances from Shame Penguin and The Thin Skinnies. The Big Wave Fest with Bugatti203, Super Sonny, and more is on Friday, and on Saturday, its BPM with music by Ike Abakah, Trey Moore, and Dave Phoenix. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford, “A Monumental Man: The Art of James Batterson,” is Tuesday, 10 am, at the Cedar Hill Cemetery. Wednesday's noontime Audio Feed features Krista Baroni in Constitution Plaza. Boo-Yah’s Free Funk Wednesday is at the Arch Street Tavern. Thursday's lunchtime music series features Zaaqqara at Pratt Street. There's a tour of the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Arch on Thursday at noon. On Friday at noon, the Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble performs at Old State House. Fusion Fridays is at the Spectra Wired Cafe, and Chad Browne-Springer is at Pratt Street. Friday night, it's Improv Comedy Night at the Sea Tea Comedy Theater. On Saturday at noon, mystery writer L.A. Starks gives a talk at the UConn Barnes & Noble. Later at 6, you can go on a Graveyard Shift Ghost Tour at the Mark Twain House. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Maiden,” a documentary of the first ever all-female crew to enter a round-the-world yacht race, “The Farewell,” an uplifting tale of a family saying goodbye to their dying grandmother, and “Mike Wallace Is Here,” an unflinching look at the legendary reporter. On Friday, they open “Cold Case Hammarskjöld,” a look at the place-crash death of a United Nations Secretary General, and “Honeyland,” about the tensions between a Macedonian beekeeper and an itinerant family. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Yesterday,” about a struggling musician who, through a reality-bending event, becomes famous for taking credit for The Beatles’s songs. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
