Good evening, it's Wednesday, August 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown and streaming live at wesufm.org. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/ Thursday, they present Gustaf, Ports of Spain, and SHY. Friday’s weekly 5pm live musical happy hour performance at The Nine, features Snake Hill Blues, and later Friday night, Decent News, The 30th of February, Set Fire To The Hive, The Wavepeak, and A/8 share a bill.
Café Nines weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Billy Cofrances, and in Saturday night, they bring you Jacques Le Coque, Eddie Golden III, and Tate and Sila.  The Nine’s Sunday Matinée features POSSM (Professors of Sweet Sweet Music), Podunk Throwbacks, Anthony Ailing, and they finish out the weekend with Shake 'N' Vibrate. http://www.cafenine.com/

Here in Middletown, On Friday, the El Trash Combo performs acoustic Americana and blues rock at The Buttonwood Tree. Saturday Robert Silverman/Bobo Lavorgna celebrate 50 years of friendship and musicianship with original and traditional jazz & blues music at The Buttonwood. Don Sineti’s gallery show spotlights marine mammals and opens on Sunday. www.buttonwood.org

Up in Hartford, On Friday at noon, the Val Ramos Flamenco Ensemble performs at Old State House. Fusion Fridays is at the Spectra Wired Cafe, and Chad Browne-Springer is at Pratt Street. Friday night, it's Improv Comedy Night at the Sea Tea Comedy Theater. On Saturday at noon, mystery writer L.A. Starks gives a talk at the UConn Barnes & Noble. Later at 6, you can go on a Graveyard Shift Ghost Tour at the Mark Twain House. The Red Rock Tavern has Sensual Salsa Saturdays at 9. On Sunday, Sea Tea Comedy Theater has a Family Show! Along with the end of summer, CT offers many agricultural fairs across the state.  This weekend brings the Haddam Neck Fair to the Haddam Neck Fairgrounds. With Traditional agricultural exhibits & contests, Tractor, Truck, and draft animal pulling competitions, a carnival midway, and tons of live music, the 109th Haddam Neck fair kicks off Friday evening and is open through Monday. Musical entertainment for this year includes, Rock Landing on Friday night. Saturday’s line up includes, DAPHNE LEE MARTIN, BELLE OF THE FALL, PONYBIRD, KERRI POWERS, JEFF BURNHAM & THE INSIDERS and SOMEONE YOU CAN XRAY. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Tonight, Hartford’s Real Art Ways ends their run of “Maiden,” a documentary of the first ever all-female crew to enter a round-the-world yacht race, as well as “The Farewell,” an uplifting tale of a family saying goodbye to their dying grandmother, You can still catch “Mike Wallace Is Here,” offering an unflinching look at the legendary reporter.

On Friday, Real Art Ways opens “Cold Case Hammarskjöld,” offering a look at the  death of a United Nations Secretary General, and “Honeyland,” about the tensions between a Macedonian beekeeper and an itinerant family. Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues The Farewell,” an uplifting tale of a family saying goodbye to their dying grandmother. Sunday Cinestudio  presents a restored version of THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE a classic 1980s French film starring Gerard Depardieu. http://www.cinestudio.org/

from 3-4am weeknights this summer, we are broadcasting our noontime edition of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
