Thurs, 8-8 Jive at Five

Good evening, it's Thursday, Aug. 8th . This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and
rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers
talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-
form programming.

I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, a progressive minded radio show which this summer airs every Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Next Tuesday, the 13th, my guests will be two experts in architecture, specifically religious architecture. One of them is particularly interested in the idea of a church on the moon!  At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, the Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller happens tomorrow at 12:30 pm, and tomorrow evening you can enjoy bluegrass with a Jewish twist performed by Nefesh Mountain. HannaH’s Field brings you their hippie reggae folk on Saturday night. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine,  tonight you can catch Baby Dynamite and the Annie Minogue Band and Friday Café Nine’ weekly 5pm Happy Hour live music set features The Sawtelles. Tomorrow night’s main event presents Spoken Nerd, David Ramos, Zak G., and more. Saturday The Nine’s weekly 4pm Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Gary Grippo &Friends. Saturday night  Sarah Borges &The Broken Singles, appear with The Split Coils. The State House in New Haven presents a night of Afrobeat tonight with Kaleta and the Super Yamba Band. It’s heavy metal tomorrow with Sperm Donor, T-Wreck, Videodome, and Hylda. Keepers of the Vibe perform at the Old State House Farmer’s Market tomorrow through Sunday.   
The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open tomorrow  evening, and it’s sensual salsa Saturdays at the Red Rock Tavern Saturday night.

Tomorrow Manic Presents brings you Howlin Rain, Garcia Peoples, and More Klementines. On Saturday Manic Presents brings The Regrettes, appearing with Hot Flash Heat Wave, and Mandala to the Space Ballroom with Tessa Violet and Chloe Lilac taking the stage on Sunday. At the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Manic Presents brings The Mountain Goats and Daughter of Swords to the stage on Friday.

The Russell Library in Middletown reminds you to take part in the Adult Summer Reading program to win a Downtown Middletown gift card with final drawing on August 12th . Down in New Haven, Toad’s Place holds another Blacklight Glow Party tomorrow with performances on two stages. In Lilly’s Pad, it’s an Envy R Summer Fest with Ro Bless, Young Picasso, Lil Anchor, and more.

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford presents a Relay for Life musical benefit tomorrow featuring Buzzard Canyon, Gorge, Crossing Rubicon, and Nomad -- and on Sunday they open the Backyard Concert Series: Hard Rock Edition with Dirt, Joe Stump, Renegade Cartel, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
At Hartford’s Real Art Ways, tonight is the final showing of  “Pavarotti,” a documentary of The Voice, The Man, The Legend, and also ending tonight is “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship and family.
Continuing are “Yesterday,” about a world that never knew the Beatles, and “In The Aisles,” a German film about a motley group of night workers in a big box store. Tomorrow they open “Light of My Life,” Casey Affleck’s film about a post-pandemic world, and “Maiden,” a documentary of the first ever all-female crew to enter a round-the-world yacht race. At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford, for one night only,  the Out Film CT Queer Thursdays offering this month is the Elton John biopic, “Rocketman.” The Stanley Kubrick tribute series resumes tomorrow and Saturday with the social satire “A Clockwork Orange,” and his 1999 film “Eyes Wide Shut,” opens Sunday. And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
