Good evening, it's Monday, August 5 th . This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and
rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers
talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-
form programming.
I’m Maria Johnson, host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, a progressive-minded radio show which airs every Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five.
Tomorrow, a visit with the Rev. William C. Mills, a priest of the Eastern Orthodox Church whose memoir, Losing My Religion, describes how unready he was to lead a parish, despite four years of college and six years of seminary. It’s a revealing look at the big and small challenges faced by priests – and by extension, us. The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds the Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of
Gratitude tonight with the Terri and Rob Duo. There’s Laughter Yoga with Mylène tomorrow
evening. The Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller happens Friday at 12:30 pm, and in the
evening you can enjoy bluegrass with a Jewish twist performed by Nefesh Mountain. HannaH’s

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Hibou, The Penniless Wild, and Big Fan.
Tameca Jones takes the stage on Tuesday, along with Fernanda and the Ephemeral.
Wednesday’s double bill’s got The Legendary Shack Shakers and J.D. Pinkus, and on Thursday
you can catch Baby Dynamite and the Annie Minogue Band. Friday’s Happy Hour features The
Sawtelles, and the late show brings you Spoken Nerd, David Ramos, Zak G., and more.
Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Gary Grippo &Friends, followed by Sarah Borges &The
Broken Singles, appearing with The Split Coils. There’s a Sunday noon fundraiser event with Bait
&Switch, and the Sunday Buzz Matinée features Anne Castellano &The Smoke, and Audio

The State House in New Haven holds an Open Mic for artists tonight with Steve Rodgers and
Ron Anthony. Enjoy Afrobeat on Thursday with Kaleta and the Super Yamba Band. It’s heavy
metal on Friday with Sperm Donor, T-Wreck, Videodome, and Hylda. They hold Summerfest:
Connecticut on Saturday with Jay Gwuapo, Traedakidd, Don Zio P, and more.

Back in Hartford, The Monday Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park continues tonight, featuring the
Mike Carabello Quintet and the Darryl Yokely Sound Reformation. Or you can enjoy jazz at the
Arch Street Tavern, too. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to explore transportation
in their new program, Wind, Wheels, and Water, on Tuesday and Thursday. The Audio Feed
series at Constitution Plaza brings you Rudy on Wednesday at noon. The Pratt Street Lunchtime
Music series continues on Thursday at noon with The Moon Shells, and at the Butler McCook
House and Garden the Sunset Sound Concert Series continues with the music of Nekita Waller
and the opening of their new exhibition of art by Mark Patnode. Enjoy funk and hip-hop when
Keepers of the Vibe perform at the Old State House Farmer’s Market Friday through Sunday.
The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open Friday evening, and it’s sensual salsa Saturdays at the
Red Rock Tavern Saturday night. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations

every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul
classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam features Tommy Whalen,
and on Thursday there’s a special appearance by blues artist Lucky Peterson. Kat Riggins &
Blues Revival take the stage on Friday night, and you can enjoy the cover band Measured Soul

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom all week starting tomorrow at Reignwolf and The Parlor
Mob. On Friday they bring you Howlin Rain, Garcia Peoples, and More Klementines. On
Saturday they headline The Regrettes, appearing with Hot Flash Heat Wave, and Mandala. You
can catch Tessa Violet and Chloe Lilac on Sunday. At the College Street Music Hall in New

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore continues its Local Author series tonight, featuring fiction
authors Robin Cannon, Lewis Beilman III, and John Popielaski. On Tuesday they host Jason
Heller with his new book, “Strange Stars.” On Thursday Charles King will present “Gods of the
Upper Air,” a book about select pioneers of cultural anthropology. Kids’ events continue this

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still offering “Pavarotti,” a documentary of The Voice, The Man, The
Legend, and “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship and family. Also
continuing is “Yesterday,” about a world that never knew the Beatles, and “In The Aisles,” a
German film about a motley group of night workers in a big box store. On Friday they open
“Light of My Life,” Casey Affleck’s film about a post-pandemic world, and “Maiden,” a
documentary of the first ever all-female crew to enter a round-the-world yacht race. Check the

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues its 8 Kubricks series with “Barry Lyndon,” a
film about a British rogue seducing his way into British aristocracy, through Wednesday. The
Out Film CT Queer Thursdays offering this month is the Elton John biopic, “Rocketman.” Kubrick
resumes on Friday and Saturday with the social satire “A Clockwork Orange,” and his 1999 film

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
