Friday 8-23-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, August 23rd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts a conversation on Sunday with Mindie Barnett and Beth Wilson-Parentice presenting books about taking charge of your life. On Monday, they hold an Educators’ Night on how to book and host a successful authors event at your school. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

In New Haven, Café Nine’s weekly Friday Happy Hour happening right now features DW Ditty. Tonight’s late show brings you the jazz of Steve Davis. Tomorrow’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, followed by a “Grime, Grime” release show featuring Jules Baxter, Sotorios, Googie, and much more. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features Fiction and Andrew Biagiarelli. http://www.cafenine.com/  

At College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Manic Presents has aComedy Bang Bang Live! with Scott Aukerman, Lauren Lapkus, and more. Tomorrow, they headline Nick Frandiani, appearing with Beach Avenue and Whatever We Are. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden tomorrow, Mark Mulcahy takes the stage along with The Split Coils. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, The 70’s Project takes you back to that decade, and tomorrow, it’s another performance by a regional favorite, the Mighty Soul Drivers. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

Also in Harford, The Arch Street Tavern in Hartford brings you the psychedelic cowpunk band, Moon Matrix of the Lizard People, tomorrow. The Cedar Hill Cemetery sponsors a Mushroom Walk tomorrow morning at 10 am, and West Indian Girls Rock holds an all-day white party, Blanc, in the evening at Heaven Skatepark. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts the Ryan Woods Autism Foundation tomorrow for a session on training parents in individualized education plans for 2020. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office invites you to learn more about crystalline glazes at a Crystal Ball Workshop sponsored by Wesleyan Potters through Sunday. The Artists for World Peace Wall will be at the MAC Firehouse Gallery in Milford through Sunday. The Brandon Terzakis Trio performs at Conspiracy tonight. And the Wadsworth Mansion holds their annual open air market Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm where you can enjoy artisan vendors, food, live music, and much more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Maiden,” a documentary of the first ever all-female crew to enter a round-the-world yacht race, “The Farewell,” an uplifting tale of a family saying goodbye to their dying grandmother, and “Mike Wallace Is Here,” an unflinching look at the legendary reporter. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is showing “Yesterday,” about as a struggling musician who, after an accident, finds himself the only person who remembers The Beatles and becomes famous after taking credit for their songs. Details at http://www.cinestudio.org/

Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:

Right after the Jive, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10-midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for Overdrive with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.

Rounding out the evening and swinging into the morning from 3-5am it’s Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica, and then we kick off our Saturday programming from 5-6 with BBC World Report.
