Good evening, it's Wednesday, May 16th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here’s some of the entertaining and cultural offerings happening in and around our region this week.


In New Haven tonight/Wednesday, Café Nine presents Shilpa Ray, appearing with Hnry Flwer. There’s a Record Release Show on Thursday for A/8 where you can catch you can catch Ulteria DJ Richard, DJ tii 99, and more. Friday Café Nine’s Women in Music Happy Hour features Sarah Witham and Joyce “The Voice ”Catalano. Friday night, Café nine presents Ponybird and Todd Lewis Kramer. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, and Saturday night H-Fi Radio, Reality Bomb, and Indoor Living take the Stage at Café Nine. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Manchurians and The Right Offs, and they round out the weekend Sunday evening with Ralph White, Dan Greene, and Alexander. http://www.cafenine.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on Thursday, it’s Cham, Serani, Cecile and Kiprich, and more. On Friday Flatbush Zombies presents their See You in Hell Tour, appearing with Kirk Knight and Nyck Caution. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight, it’s their Wednesday Community Blues Jam. Liviu’s Invitational happens every Thursday, and on Friday enjoy rock ‘n’ roll from the 50’s and 60’s with Four Barrel Billy. This Friday, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown welcomes the return of David Davis with Sax InThe City. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned with Source workshop, and in the afternoon there’s a Teen Open Mic. The Kennedys take the stage Saturday evening with acoustic folk and pop. The Greater Hartford Arts Council holds an Effective Program Design Workshop Thursday at 9 am at its Pearl Street location. Learn how to improving design can improve grant and sponsorship success. www.letsgoarts.org

At Infinity Hall in Hartford you can hear blues and rock on Thursday with Doyle Bramhall II. On Friday it’s British Progressive Rock with RENAISSANCE. On Sunday Indivisible Connecticut presents Songs of Hope & Resolve with a host of performers. A portion of the proceeds will benefit local action groups. Check the website for details. Thursday at Infinity Norfolk you can catch Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives - Way Out West Tour bringing Grammy award winning Country & Bluegrass to the stage. Cherry St. Station in Wallingford brings you Howling Giant, Owl Maker, and Gorge on Thursday. On Friday, it’s Soldiers of Solace, Noxii Arena, Interchange, and more. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts author Gloria F Perry who presents “Playing Your Game,” A Consequences Novel, in their Women in the NAACP lecture series on Saturday at 5 pm. The Hartford Department of Recreation holds its annual Family Fun Fishing Derby Saturday at Godwin Park staring at 9 am. Bring your own tackle and gear.

Bike the Park happens once a month in Colt Park in Hartford May through October and starts this week at 10 am. A safety talk and map are included. www.hartford.com/events/

Free History Tours of the Church of the Good Shephard and Parish House, built by Samual Colt’s widow, happen this Saturday in Hartford. Details at www.hartford.com/events/

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Hitler’s Hollywood,” a documentary that collages key films from the Nazi era, “Claire’s Camera,” a French comedy about a schoolteacher in Cannes, and the recent superhero release, “Black Panther.” On Friday they open “1945,” a film about Holocaust guilt in Hungary, and “Lives Well Lived,” the collected stories of people aged 75 to 100. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues a run “Ismael’s Ghosts,” a French about the return of a filmmaker’s wife while he is shooting a movie. Right after the Jive at Five on Wednesdays its the Latin Music Hour with Isabel Calione Latin music from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. 

At 6pm  Captured with DJ Aurah Explores the art of writing about other people.

From 6:30-8pm Fusion Radio with James Fusion presents a 90 minute techno mix.

At 8pm The Warehouse with Mike Nyce features underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

From 9:30-11pm  The Vault with DJ Anton Banks wraps up our electronic dance music block.

From 11-midnight dumpster dive with smelly and yourstruly presents punk, art pop and diy coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At midnight THE TONIGHT SHOW with Balsamic and Shlomo is a Late-Night talk show style show concerning pop culture, politics and new music

From 1-2am Kellex and Kleenog’s Radio Hour keeps the fun going with experimental music and talk.

From 2-4am DJ Coroner’s Last Will and Testimony Haunts the Midnight airwaves with an eclectic mix of oneiric, experimental sounds. Ambient, noise, drone, poetry readings and more--sonic flotsam from the abandoned station.
And at 4am, the BBC World News comes on board and we begin our broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
