 Good evening, it's Tuesday, May 29th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

With just about a just under $10K left to raise, WESU is needs help to close this pledge drive and end out our fiscal year with a balanced budget. Middletown City Arts Advocates will be assembling at Middletown City Hall on this evening  @ 6pm for a peaceful protest and display of solidarity prior to the common council’s meeting when they will vote yes or no on the future of the City’s position of full time Arts Administrator. Protestors will wear attire reflective of the arts community they represent.   

The Russell Library in Middletown hosts their Classic Mystery Book discussion Tuesday at 7 pm on “The Crow Trap” by Ann Cleves. The Library Leadership and Management Association presents a webinar on Wednesday at 2:30 pm, Assessing your Library Buildings. There’s a Mother-Daughter Book Discussion Wednesday at 6 pm on “Wonder,” as part of the One Book on the Riverbend series, and the Connecticut Poetry Society also meets at that time. Their Jazz Up Close series continues Thursday at 7 pm with guitarist/composer Amanda Monaco and her Pirkei Avot Project. Peter Standaart’s Divine Enthusiasm project happens Saturday at 10:30 am, and the US Passport Office will be there for you to obtain or renew a passport. In New Haven, tonight at Café Nine you can catch Wess Meets West, Snowpiler, The Refectory, “Ourselves, Alone”, and Calls. Café Nine hosts another evening of Words & Music Wednesday, and on Thursday, there’s a Record Release show with John Gorka. Friday’s Happy Hour performance at 5pm features Lyn Malavolte. Friday Night The Greyhounds and The Split Coils take the Café Nine Stage. Saturday’s weekly Afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends. Saturday night’s late show features Strawberry Cheesesteak and Added Color. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Invitational. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Lives Well Lived,” the collected stories of people aged 75 to 100, and “Isle of Dogs,” a stop-motion film by Wes Anderson, as well as “Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat.” On Friday they open “The Guardians,” a French film about loss and resilience in WWI, and “Becoming Who I Was,” about a young boy’s trek to become a Tibetan monk. Saturday’s film is “Abe and Phil’s Last Poker Game,” and includes a post-film Q&A with cast member Pamela Dubin. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “King of Hearts,” an ultra-HD restoration of the 1966 cult classic about a WWI soldier in a French village. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “1945,” a film about Holocaust guilt in Hungary, and “Lives Well Lived,” the collected stories of people aged 75 to 100. Also continuing is “I Feel Pretty,” starring Amy Schumer as an insecure woman who believes she’s a supermodel after a head injury. Right after The jive at Five, stay tuned for an hour of Free Form music on Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat who declares he’s got a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers.

From 6-8pm stay tuned for Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill for an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. On tonight's show, the Skunk Misery Fiddle Club of the Fire in the Kitchen series is live in the studio on Acoustic Blender.
