Thursday's Jive


Good evening, it's Thursday, May 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Tonight At the Russell Library in Middletown, Sharpen Your Networking and Interview Skills, Thursday evening at 6 pm. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

This Friday, The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown welcomes the return of David Davis with Sax InThe City. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned with Source workshop, and in the afternoon there’s a Teen Open Mic. The Kennedys take the stage Saturday evening with acoustic folk and pop. The multimedia exhibit by artist Geonna Kline runs through the month. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight There’s a Record Release Show on Thursday for A/8 where you can catch you can catch Ulteria DJ Richard, DJ tii 99, and more. Friday Café Nine’s Women in Music Happy Hour features Sarah Witham and Joyce “The Voice ”Catalano. Friday night, Café nine presents Ponybird and Todd Lewis Kramer. Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, and Saturday night H-Fi Radio, Reality Bomb, and Indoor Living take the Stage at Café Nine. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features The Manchurians and The Right Offs, and they round out the weekend Sunday evening with Ralph White, Dan Greene, and Alexander. http://www.cafenine.com/

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, on tonight, it’s Cham, Serani, Cecile and Kiprich, and more. On Friday Flatbush Zombies presents their See You in Hell Tour, appearing with Kirk Knight and Nyck Caution. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight,Liviu’s Invitational happens every Thursday, and on Friday enjoy rock ‘n’ roll from the 50’s and 60’s with Four Barrel Billy. At Infinity Hall in Hartford you can hear blues and rock on Thursday with Doyle Bramhall II. On Friday it’s British Progressive Rock with RENAISSANCE. On Sunday Indivisible Connecticut presents Songs of Hope & Resolve with a host of performers. A portion of the proceeds will benefit local action groups. Check the website for details. Thursday at Infinity Norfolk you can catch Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives - Way Out West Tour bringing Grammy award winning Country & Bluegrass to the stage. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts author Gloria F Perry who presents “Playing Your Game,” A Consequences Novel, in their Women in the NAACP lecture series on Saturday at 5 pm. The Hartford Department of Recreation holds its annual Family Fun Fishing Derby Saturday at Godwin Park staring at 9 am. Bring your own tackle and gear.

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Hitler’s Hollywood,” a documentary that collages key films from the Nazi era, “Claire’s Camera,” a French comedy about a schoolteacher in Cannes, and the recent superhero release, “Black Panther.” On Friday they open “1945,” a film about Holocaust guilt in Hungary, and “Lives Well Lived,” the collected stories of people aged 75 to 100. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues a run “Ismael’s Ghosts,” a French about the return of a filmmaker’s wife while he is shooting a movie. 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ G and Victoria Our show will feature local artists from different cities across the county. Each show will focus on one city and feature mostly alternative rock artists. 

(2,4) The Sonic Hour with DJ Jackson Focus on indie rock, prog pop, power pop, indie pop, etc. 
Shows will compare music from a previous generation with their contemporaries.

2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels. 

(2,4) Doin’ It For Yourself with DJ Chrystanthemum and DJ Baby Boy DJs Chrystanthemum and Baby Boy showcase the world of DIY, from backyard inventors to bedroom musicians.
3-4am The Hour of Slack from the Church of The Subgenius.

At 4am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
