Good evening, it's Friday, May 11h. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here’s what’s happening in our area this week.

Tonight’s headliner at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown is Hiroya Tsukamoto with Sophie Spaner & Mat Seymour opening the show. Saturday morning it’s the Aligned with Source workshop, and Saturday evening you can enjoy the dynamic music of the Joe Fonda Trio. Also in Middletown, The Russell Library Friends of the Library Book Sale continues tomorrow/Saturday. There’s live Chamber Music in the Courtyard Saturday morning, and their Authors 06457 series continues in the lobby with Chanda E Gonzalez and Lisa Irish. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s tonight, Carla Cooke, daughter of the legendary Sam Cooke takes the stage. In New Haven tonight, Café Nine presents Maple Mars, The Shellye Valauskas Experience, and The Rationales share a triple bill. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends and The main event Saturday night features Duwayne Burnside, son of the late blues legend R.L. Burnside. Black Snake Boots open that show. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee‘s features Chris Barron and Tim Palmieri. This Saturday, at DNKL, Tibetan Buddhist Center for World Peace in Redding, CT Author Janet Ettele (sounds like Italy with an "EE" sound at the beginning and end), will discuss the every-day practicality of certain Buddhist principles to cultivate inner peace, a necessary ingredient for world peace. This talk begins at 11:00AM and will present Buddhist philosophies and wisdom through a lens that is applicable to anyone regardless of faith or tradition. For more information visit DNKL.org.

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through This Sunday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “Little Pink House,” a film about a woman fighting eminent domain in New London CT. Today RAW opens three film runs: “Hitler’s Hollywood,” a documentary that collages key films from the Nazi era. “Claire’s Camera,” a French comedy about a schoolteacher in Cannes, and the recent Marvel blockbuster, “Black Panther.” screening times at www.realartways.org

Through Saturday, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford is showing “Love, Simon,” a gay rom com. Sunday’s National Theatre Live screening is “Macbeth,” and they open a run of the film “Ismael’s Ghosts.” on Sunday. Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with DJ Balsamic & DJ Pig in the City.

At 6:30 stay tuned for The Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7 its The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T - offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

From 8:30-10pm, its From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee presenting Dancehall and lover’s rock Reggae and R&B, from local and international artists.   
                                                        
at 10 stay tuned for Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N.

From 12:30am until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

We bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

From 6 to 7am, it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

Caffé Italia takes over from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning.
