Good evening, it's Wednesday, May 9th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here’s what’s happening in our area this week.

Tomorrow, the Wesleyan Center for the Arts presents the Annual Organ Romp  at Memorial Chapel on Thursday. There’s West African Drumming and Dance on Friday in the CFA Courtyard, and the Zilkha Gallery hosts a Reception for the Thesis Art Exhibition Saturday afternoon. Details at www.wesleyan.edu/cfa/


Tonight/Wednesday, the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown is hosting an Opening Reception for the May exhibition of mixed media works by Geonna Kilne. You can enjoy Senegalese tama drumming and world percussion Thursday night with Tona Vacca and Massamba Diop. Friday’s headliner at The Buttonwood Tree you can catch guitarist/composer Hiroya Tsukamoto, who will be calling Bill Revill live in the studio on Acoustic Blender, tonight. Sophie Spaner & Mat Seymour open that shows. you On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned with Source workshop, and in the evening you can enjoy the music of the Joe Fonda Trio. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Victoria Smolkin today/Wednesday with “A Sacred Space is Never Empty” a history of Soviet atheism. At The Russell Library in Middletown tonight/Wednesday, there's a discussion of “Wonder” as part of the One Book on the Riverbend series, and Joseph Reynolds reads from his novel, “Make Dust Our Paper.” The Friends of the Library Book Sale happens Friday and Saturday. Their Crafts for Adults series Friday morning presents Painting Rocks. There’s Chamber Music in the Courtyard Saturday morning, and their Authors 06457 series continues in the lobby with Chanda E Gonzalez and Lisa Irish. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s it’s their weekly Wednesday Community Blues Jam. Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests happens every Thursday, and this Friday you can enjoy Carla Cooke, daughter of the legendary Sam Cooke. It’s original Detroit modern soul on Saturday with Laura Rain & The Caesars on stage at Blackeyed Sally’s and there’s a special Mother’s Day Gospel Brunch on Sunday at 11 am. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/


In New Haven tonight, Café Nine presents the Saint James Trio. You can catch Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog at Café Nine on Thursday. Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour set at The Nine features DW Ditty, and later Friday night Maple Mars, The Shellye Valauskas Experience, and The Rationales share a triple bill. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends and The main event Saturday night features Duwayne Burnside, son of the late blues legend R.L. Burnside. Black Snake Boots open that show. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee‘s features Chris Barron and Tim Palmieri. The Connecticut Historical Society hosts scholar Maisha Sinha who will discuss her new book, “The Slave’s Cause: A New History of the Abolition Movement,” Thursday at 5:30 pm at their Hartford location. www.chs.org

This Saturday, at DNKL, Tibetan Buddhist Center for World Peace in Redding, CT Author Janet Ettele (sounds like Italy with an "EE" sound at the beginning and end), will discuss the every-day practicality of certain Buddhist principles to cultivate inner peace, a necessary ingredient for world peace. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “Little Pink House,” a film about a woman fighting eminent domain in New London CT, also continuing through Thursday is “Zama,” a South American film about colonialism and one man’s destiny, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Hitler’s Hollywood,” a documentary that collages key films from the Nazi era. Also opening is “Claire’s Camera,” a French comedy about a schoolteacher in Cannes, and the recent superhero release, “Black Panther.” Check the website for details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Leaning Into The Wind: Andy Goldsworthy” a documentary of his ephemeral art, through tonight/Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Love, Simon,” a gay romcom. From 11-midnight dumpster dive with smelly and yourstruly presents punk, art pop and diy coming from a garbage compactor near you.

At midnight THE TONIGHT SHOW with Balsamic and Shlomo is a Late-Night talk show style show concerning pop culture, politics and new music

From 1-2am Kellex and Kleenog’s Radio Hour keeps the fun going with experimental music and talk.

From 2-4am DJ Coroner’s Last Will and Testimony Haunts the Midnight airwaves with an eclectic mix of oneiric, experimental sounds. Ambient, noise, drone, poetry readings and more--sonic flotsam from the abandoned station.
And at 4am, the BBC World News comes on board and we begin our broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
