Monday 7-15-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, July 15th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown and streaming live at wesufm.org. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree hosts Laughter Yoga with Dawn on Tuesday evening, followed by a Crystal Bowl Sound Healing with Lou Sorrentino. On Thursday, it’s Shaking the Tree, a Gong and Sound Meditation. The Hearing Voices Network with Jessica Miller meets Friday at 12:30 pm, and in the evening you can enjoy R& B, soul, and light pop with Indigo Soul. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. In the evening, you can enjoy the experimental music of Joe White & Friends. You’re invited to check out the retrospective of Barbara Newton Hahn’s oil-on-canvas works all month. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you the Sweet Lizzy Project, Esor Rose, and Fernanda and the Ephemeral. On Tuesday they bring you Bassel & The Supernaturals, along with Dylan Connor. Wednesday is a 2000s karaoke night, and the headliners on Thursday are Mooncha, and Chef the Chef. The Relax Trio and Johnny Cab take the stage on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Buzz Gordo, followed by the late show with Casey James Prestwood and the Burning Angels appearing with The Split Coils. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and in the evening you can catch Daby Touré and Ro Godwynn. The Sunday Matinée features Nikki Hill, and in the evening they’ve got Ocean Heights, Mandala, Chousand, and more. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features the Sarah Hanahan Quartet this week, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam features Ray Morant, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. On Friday you can dance the night away with Say Yeah!, and on Saturday Jeff Pitchell & Texas Flood returns to Sally’s stage. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The State House in New Haven hosts an original songwriters open mic session tonight at 7 pm. On Friday, it’s the BKO Quintet from Mali appearing with the Klezmer Fusion Collective. It’s hardcore night on Saturday, powered by Vein. www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, The Monday Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park continues tonight, featuring Jocelyn Pleasant and The Lost Tribe, and Sherry Winston. The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to learn about the history of weather at Family Adventure Days: A Storm is Coming!, on Tuesday and Thursday. There’s a full moon hike Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at Riverside Park. Riverfront Recapture offers a free fitness class at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza Tuesday evenings through August, and The Cirque du Soleil performances of “Luzia” continue Tuesday through Sunday at the Big Top. The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza features Pat Stone on Wednesday at noon, and you’re invited to Workout Wednesdays at the Old State House. In the evening Cedar Hill Cemetery offers a highlight tour. The Elizabeth Park summer Concert Series on Wednesday headlines Eight to the Bar, and it’s karaoke night at The Russell on Pratt St. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music series continues on Thursday at noon with Sondra Levine, and at 7 pm the Historical Society holds an outdoor concert with Betsy’s Band, featuring traditional New England country dances. It’s the weekend of the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, Friday through Sunday at Bushnell Park. The Connecticut Ballet offers “Ballet Under the Stars” Saturday in Bushnell Park. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness classes, including bilingual offerings. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore holds their monthly local author program tonight at 7 pm with nonfiction authors Harry Bird, David Bouchier, and Christopher A. Cozzi. They host Irene Goldman-Price on Wednesday to discuss “Selected Poems of Edith Wharton.” The Local Author series continues on Thursday with non-fiction Green Press publications by Neile Parisi, Ehris Urban, and more. There’s a Mason Jar Press panel event with Sarah Cody on Friday, presenting novellas by Nicole Callihan, Jaime Fountaine, and Tomas Moniz. The Russell Library in Middletown reminds you to take part in the Adult Summer Reading program to win a downtown Middletown gift card with the next drawing on July 29th. Scrabble Wednesday is on the calendar at 5 pm, and they open a six-week fiddle workshop at 6 pm. The Google Drive Workshop Wednesday evening is on wait-list status, and there’s an Eat Rite Workshop for Teens on BBQ Sides. A Solar for All session happens Saturday morning, and the Life Discoveries series for kids continues at 1 pm. If someone you know is home insecure, the library can help. Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall tomorrow with Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul. They bring you Nick Kroll live on Thursday, appearing with Sam Jay. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden, they’ve got Covet, Vasudeva, and Holy Fawn on Wednesday, and Local H and Marvelous Liars on Friday. They finish out the week at the Space on Saturday with Midnight North, The Backyard Committee, and Tracy Jo & The Toads. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk it’s Conor Oberst and Joanna Sternberg on Friday. www.manicpresents.com

The Middletown Commission on the Arts opens their Summer Sounds Concert Series Tuesday evening at Union Park on the South Green featuring the classic rock of Fun Factor. Bring chairs or blankets, check out the sponsored food truck, and enjoy the family fun. www.cityofmiddletown.com/Calendar

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Citizens Bank 5K Summer Fun Run happens Wednesday starting at 5 pm. The Music at the Mansion series continues at the Wadsworth mansion, featuring CJ West and the Downtown Train. Bring your own picnic meal or sample the food trucks. There’s a Teaching Artists open session at Oddfellows Playhouse on Thursday at 4 pm, and at 5:30 the Rockfall Foundation sponsors an “Eating Greener” session at It’s Only Natural Restaurant. And The Kids, The Harmaleighs, and Olive Tiger will be at the MAC 650 Gallery and Artist Co-Op on Friday. The Johan Center for Earth and Art invites you to a summer garden party on Saturday at 4 pm at the home of Board members Kathy and Mark Meyering. Infinity Hall in Norfolk invites you to hear Americana and Western swing with The Quebe Sisters on Wednesday. On Thursday they’ve got Robert Randolph and The Family Band with funk and soul. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still running “Pavarotti,” a documentary about The Voice, The Man, The Legend, and continues “Echo in the Canyon,” a documentary of the Laurel Canyon music scene of the mid-60’s. Also continuing through Thursday is “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” a documentary about the writer featuring peers, critics, and colleagues. On Friday they open “In the Aisles,” a German film about the magical world of a big box store, and “The Other Story,” an Israeli film about family and secular/religious conflict. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The Souvenir,” a mystery that takes place during the Thatcher years in Britain, through Thursday. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

(1, 3, 5) At 8 until 9:30, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
