Friday, 7-19, Jive


Good evening, it's Friday, July 19th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown and streaming live at wesufm.org. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown this everning you can enjoy R& B, soul, and light pop with Indigo Soul. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens tomorrow morning, and there’s a Teen Open Mic in the afternoon. In the evening, you can enjoy the experimental music of Joe White & Friends. In New Haven, at Café Nine, this evening's Happy Hour features Buzz Gordo, followed by the late show with Casey James Prestwood and the Burning Angels appearing with The Split Coils. Tomorrow's Jazz Jam session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and in the evening you can catch Daby Touré and Ro Godwynn. Tonight, the State House in New Haven hosts the BKO Quintet from Mali appearing with the Klezmer Fusion Collective. It’s hardcore night tomorrow, powered by Vein. www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, tthe Cirque du Soleil performances of “Luzia” continue  through Sunday at the Big Top.  It’s the weekend of the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, Friday through Sunday at Bushnell Park. The Connecticut Ballet offers “Ballet Under the Stars” tomorrow in Bushnell Park. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness classes, including bilingual offerings. The Russell Library in Middletown reminds you to take part in the Adult Summer Reading program to win a downtown Middletown gift card with the next drawing on July 29th. A Solar for All session happens tomorrow morning, and the Life Discoveries series for kids continues at 1 pm. If someone you know is home insecure, the library can help.  At the Space Ballroom in Hamden, they’ve got Local H and Marvelous Liars tonight. Now here's what you can expect tonight on WESU: 

Right after the Jive, it’s Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

From 7-9 pm, The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T., offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 9:00-10pm board the Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic who brings out the best hits of the ska era of popular Jamaican music, as well as highly sought after obscure releases.

From 10- Midnight, stay tuned for Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee, presenting 2 hrs of Local Unsigned Hip Hop artists.

From 12:00-3am, stay tuned for Overdrive with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music.
