Good evening, it's Wednesday, July 3rd -This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Tonight, here in Middletown, The Wesleyan University Center for the Arts presents New Haven’s experimental soul ensemble, Phat A$tronaut, performing live in the CFA Courtyard at 7 pm. This event is free and open to the public. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that the Music at the Mansion series opens this Wednesday at the Wadsworth Mansion with a performance by Shaded Soul. Bring your own picnic meal or sample the food trucks. There’s a guided nature walk at the Middletown Nature Garden Saturday at 10 am, and in the evening, Horse Jumper of Love, Glambat, and waveform will perform at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op.www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Also here in Middletown, Thursday night at The Buttonwood Tree, Bob Gotta hosts his long running Acoustic Open Mic. The Hearing Voices Network meets on Friday at 12:30 pm, and Friday evening, the Story City Troupe takes the stage. You can enjoy folk artist Letitia Van Sant on Saturday night, and on Sunday at 2 pm there’s a reception for this month’s art exhibit, a retrospective of Barbara Newton Hahn’s oil-on-canvas works. In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, Shake ‘N’ Vibrate offers a special Independence Day Dance Off & Soul Shakedown. Friday The Nine’s 5pm Happy Hour set features The Tommys. Friday night  Big Fang, The Grand Par, and Dangerous Animals. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and in the evening they bring you Paranormal Adam, Stars of Beyond, and much more. The Sunday Matinée features a KMA Fundraiser with Brain Bank, The Squalors, and Daze In, and they finish out the weekend with Seb El Zin and Falconeer. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Also in New Haven, tonight, The State House holds a Puro Tayta Shanti album listening session on with a tropical music afterparty. Sessa performs Brazilian pop at State House on Friday, appearing with Alexander. They’ve got an 80’s/90’s alternative dance party on Friday paying homage to New Order and Joy Division. On Sunday, it’s their Blues ‘N’ Brisket event, featuring the Cobalt Rhythm Kings.  www.statehousepresents.com


Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on tonight with The War and Treaty, appearing with Philippe Bronchtein. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk on Sunday they bring you The Allman Betts Band.www.manicpresents.com

Wednesday Toad’s Place in New Haven brings you Roots Reggae super-star Mykal Rose backed by the legendary Sly & Robbie rhythm section on performing their Summer Groove Tour. www.toadsplace.com
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, You can catch their weekly Wednesday night community Blues Jam, this evening. Friday Sally’s present the Rich Badowski Blues Band. It’s roots, rhythm, and blues on Saturday night with Ozzie Williams. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

In Hartford, The Bushnell Park Beer Garden opens Friday at 4 pm, offering beer, pizza, and games each week. Military service members and veterans are invited to free rowing and kayaking sessions every Saturday at 9:30 am at Riverside Park, and historic tours of Bushnell Park happen at 10 am monthly through October. Sensual Salsa Saturdays happen at the Red Rock Tavern at 9 pm. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness classes, including some that are bilingual. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways has held over the run of “Pavarotti,” a documentary about The Voice, The Man, The Legend, and continues “Echo in the Canyon,” a documentary on the Laurel Canyon music scene of the mid-60’s. Friday they open “The Reports on Sarah and Saleem,” a drama of clandestine Israeli/Palestinian love, and “The Raft,” a documentary that revisits the crew of a raft that crossed the Atlantic in 1973. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Shadow,” a Chinese Game of Thrones-type film about three ancient kingdoms at war, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” the uncut director’s version, in celebration of Cinestudio’s 50th anniversary season.  At 3am, this summer we'll be rebroadcasting the day's noon brodacst of Democracy Now! From Pacifica.

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
