programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio
from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources.
Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best
in free-form programming.
I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith, a progressive minded radio show which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. this week:
The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds the Anything
Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight with Bill Katz. The Middlesex
Drum Circle meets on Thursday evening, and the Hearing Voices Network with
Jessica Miller happens Friday at 12:30 pm. You can catch reggae with the Epic
Order Band on Friday evening. On Saturday evening Prime RyB takes the stage,
bringing you Americana, roots, soul, R& B, and much more. The retrospective
of Barbara Newton Hahn’s oil-on-canvas works is on view all month. www.buttonwood.org
Music On The River continues its free concert series held on the lawn of the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. Tonight, Sierra Hull performs and next Monday, July 29th, it’s the Rainbow Girls. The concerts start at 6:30. http://www.easthaddam.org/Music-on-the-River/
In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Un, Wormwitch, and Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean. On Tuesday you can hear Boulevards, Salwa, and Brian Bank. The Tony Purrone Trio performs jazz on Wednesday, and on Thursday they headline Screams of Hockomock and The Atomic Unknown. Friday’s Happy Hour features Bruce & Loralee Crowder, and the late show’s got Joey Wit and The Definition, The Let Loose, and Julian Sherwood. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with the George Baker Band, followed by Drunk Mums, Ryxno, and Honch. The Sunday Matinée brings Snughouse to the Stage, and they round out the weekend with The Avengers and Lushlife. http://www.cafenine.com/
Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays
features the Ron Smith Quartet this week, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra
brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s community
blues jam features Ed Bradley, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on
Thursday. Gracie Curran & The Highfalutin Band comes your way Friday night
with blues and soul, and on Saturday they bring you the Franklin Brothers with

The State House in New Haven
brings you pop punk tonight with Iron Chic, Toys That Kill, Ramona, and Dust
Control. Tuesday’s headliner is Mal Blum, appearing with Laundry Day and
Spit-Take. DJ Bobby D takes the stage on Saturday with The Bobby Torello Band

Back in Hartford, The Monday
Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park continues tonight, featuring Orquesta Espada
& the Elio Villafranca Quartet. The Connecticut Historical Society journeys
into space with “From Connecticut to Beyond!” Tuesday and Thursday. The Audio
Feed series at Constitution Plaza features Xavier Serrano on Wednesday at noon,
and TheaterWorks brings you folk, bluegrass and more with a Living Room Concert
with Lindsey Fyfe and Friends in the evening. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music
series continues on Thursday at noon with Savannah King, and it’s Off the
Record Indie Night at Little River Restoratives later that night. Hartford
Prints! hosts their 6th Hartford Handsome Party and Night Market
Friday at 6 pm on Pratt St. with music, food, and more, and Cedar Hill Cemetery
holds Music Among the Memorials with the folk/rock/blues duo, The Meadows
Brothers. The Nick DiMaria Quartet is at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company
Friday at 7 pm. The Hartford Mindfulness
Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and
check their website for free yoga and fitness classes, including bilingual

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom
all week, presenting Martin Courtney and Ryley Walker tomorrow. On Wednesday,
you can catch Loma Prieta, Jeromes Dream, Corrode, and more. On Thursday, Ghost
Light featuring Holly Bowling, Hamilton, Raina Mullen and more take the stage.
You can catch Municipal Waste and Intercourse on Friday, along with the new
record release of Kidnapped. Stand-up comedian Pete Davidson will be at the
Space on Saturday for a special two-show event. Manic is also at the College
Street Music Hall in New Haven on Friday with Kurt Vile and the Violators,
appearing with J Mascis. They headline Kodaline on Saturday, along with

The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore hosts
Peggy Adler on Tuesday evening with her new book, “Clinton: Images of America.”
On Wednesday you can join Jennifer Blankfein in conversation with Bianca Marais
to discuss “If You Want to Make God Laugh.” Jode Millman will be at the
bookstore Thursday evening to present “The Midnight Call.” It’s Philosophy

The Russell Library in Middletown
reminds you to take part in the Adult Summer Reading program to win a downtown

& Career Center sponsors a workshop Tuesday evening with Jan Melnik, “The
Tools: Targeted Resumé, Cover Letter, and LinkedIn Profile.” Scrabble Wednesday
is on the calendar at 5 pm, the Fiddle Workshop continues at 6 pm. There’s Yoga
on Saturday morning in two locations, and the Life Discoveries series for teens

Office wants you to know that the Music at the Mansion series continues Wednesday
at the Wadsworth mansion featuring Plywood Cowboy. The Shoreline Arts Alliance
hosts the first of its Images photography conversations Wednesday at 6 pm at
the Green Community Center in Guilford. The topic is “Capture the Concept: The
Creative Purpose of Photography.” The Middletown Recreation Division holds
Friday Night Bingo this week at the Senior Center. The Old Lyme Midsummer
Festival sponsors a free concert Friday with Nekita Waller at the Griswold
Museum grounds. Oddfellows Playhouse presents a night of comedy with Carmen
Lagala & The Tasty Chicks Saturday at 7:30 pm. And Wesleyan Potters is
offering a summer workshop, Embroidery for Child & Adult, Sunday at 1 pm

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track
in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still running “Pavarotti,”
a documentary about the Voice, the Man, the Legend, and “Toni Morrison: The
Pieces I Am,” a documentary about the iconic author. Also continuing is “The
Other Story,” an Israeli film about family and secular/religious conflict, and
“The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship and family. On
Friday they open “Firecrackers,” about a dismantling friendship in a destitute
Canadian town, and “Rojo,” an Argentinian crime thriller. Details and screening

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “The
Dead Don’t Die,” a comic horror about three bumbling cops hunting zombies in
Pennsylvania, through Thursday. Their National Theatre Live selection this week

a restored version of the 1960 Stanley Kubrick classic, “Spartacus.” Details and

From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of
contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live
interviews.
At 8 until 9:30 pm, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused
Folk. Americana music
from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and
roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.
At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program.
Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot
of fun.
From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z,

From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going
on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.
Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted
audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.
At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across
borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and
sometimes from right in your own backyard.
From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime
episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.
Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World
Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at
5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
