Monday 7-1-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, July 1st. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude with the Terri and Rob Duo. There’s Laughter Yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday. The Hearing Voices Network meets on Friday at 12:30 pm, and in the evening, the Story City Troupe takes the stage. You can enjoy folk artist Letitia Van Sant on Saturday night, and on Sunday at 2 pm there’s a reception for this month’s art exhibit, a retrospective of Barbara Newton Hahn’s oil-on-canvas works. In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Dreadnought, Sea of Bones, and Mourn the Light. On Tuesday they’ve got Sadistik, Elucid, Dope Knife, and more. There’s a special Independence Day Dance Off & Soul Shakedown on Wednesday with Shake ‘N’ Vibrate. Friday’s Happy Hour features The Tommys, followed by the late show with Big Fang, The Grand Par, and Dangerous Animals. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and in the evening they bring you Paranormal Adam, Stars of Beyond, and much more. The Sunday Matinée features a KMA Fundraiser with Brain Bank, The Squalors, and Daze In, and they finish out the weekend with Seb El Zin and Falconeer. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features the Lummie Spann Quartet this week, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday, and on Friday they present the Rich Badowski Blues Band. It’s roots, rhythm, and blues on Saturday night with Ozzie Williams. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The Russell Library in Middletown reminds you to take part in the adult summer reading program and earn raffle tickets for downtown Middletown gift cards. The next prize drawing is July 15th. The State House in New Haven holds a Puro Tayta Shanti album listening session on Wednesday with a tropical music afterparty. Sessa performs Brazilian pop on Friday, appearing with Alexander. They’ve got an 80’s/90’s alternative dance party on Friday paying homage to New Order and Joy Division. On Sunday, it’s their Blues ‘N’ Brisket event, featuring the Cobalt Rhythm Kings.  www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford,. Riverfront Recapture offers a free fitness class at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza Tuesday evenings through August. Rose garden tours at Bushnell Park continue on Wednesday mornings. The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza sponsors Kelly English Wednesday at noon. The Cirque du Soleil performances of “Luzia” continue Tuesday through Sunday under the Big Top at Riverfront Plaza. The Elizabeth Park summer concert series continues Wednesday with a performance by the Goza Latin Band at 6:30 pm. The Bushnell Park Beer Garden opens Friday at 4 pm, offering beer, pizza, and games each week. Military service members and veterans are invited to free rowing and kayaking sessions every Saturday at 9:30 am at Riverside Park, and historic tours of Bushnell Park happen at 10 am monthly through October. Sensual Salsa Saturdays happen at the Red Rock Tavern at 9 pm. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness classes, including some that are bilingual. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday with The War and Treaty, appearing with Philippe Bronchtein. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk on Sunday they bring you The Allman Betts Band. www.manicpresents.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that the Music at the Mansion series opens this Wednesday at the Wadsworth Mansion with a performance by Shaded Soul. Bring your own picnic meal or sample the food trucks. The Recreation Division holds a free yoga class Wednesday at 4:30 and preregistration is encouraged. There’s a guided nature walk at the Middletown Nature Garden Saturday at 10 am, and in the evening, Horse Jumper of Love, Glambat, and waveform will perform at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts presents actor/songwriter Douglas Lyons Tuesday at noon at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. Phat A$tronaut, New Haven’s experimental soul ensemble, performs in the CFA Courtyard Wednesday at 7 pm. Both events are free. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways has held over the run of “Pavarotti,” a documentary about The Voice, The Man, The Legend, and continues “Echo in the Canyon,” a documentary on the Laurel Canyon music scene of the mid-60’s. Both run through Thursday. On Friday they open “The Reports on Sarah and Saleem,” a drama of clandestine Israeli/Palestinian love, and “The Raft,” a documentary that revisits the crew of a raft that crossed the Atlantic in 1973. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Shadow,” a Chinese Game of Thrones-type film about three ancient kingdoms at war, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” the uncut director’s version, in celebration of Cinestudio’s 50th anniversary season. Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8pm until 9:30, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

At 9:30pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4, am stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
