calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown.
By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent
and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and
community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.
I'm
Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday
of the month at 4 pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s
from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.
Now
here's some of what's happening in our area this week:
The
Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds its Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of
Gratitude tonight with Kyla. The Free at Last Players perform Tuesday at 7:30
and Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta is Thursday evening. The Hearing Voices
Network appears Friday afternoon, and that evening, the Story City Troupe takes
on the theme, “An Ah-Ha Moment.” Eliot Lewis, independent artist and
multi-instrumentalist, takes the stage on Saturday. www.buttonwood.org
Music
On The River continues its free concert series held on the lawn of the
Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam. Tonight, Rainbow Girls perform and next
Monday, it’s Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez. The concerts start

In New Haven, at Café Nine,
Manic Mondays brings you Cycles, The Alpaca Gnomes, and Daze In. On Tuesday
it's the Pigeon English Record Release Party with Frank Critelli and Chris
Bouquet. Words & Music performs on Wednesday, and on Thursday they headline
L & E: The Duo and Ab-Sidian. Friday’s Happy Hour features Paddy & Coe,
and the late show’s got Murphy's Law and So Long Liberty. Saturday’s Jazz Jam
session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by Tal National and
Southwind Social Club that night. The Sunday Matinée brings The Furors, Lys
Guillorn and Her Band, and Forest Harlow to the stage, and they round out the

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed
Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features the Matt Chasen Group this week, and Michael
Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on
Tuesday. Wednesday’s community blues jam features Tim McDonald, and Liviu’s
Invitational comes your way on Thursday. Ed Fast & Conga Bop comes your way
Friday night with Afro Cuban inspired music, and on Saturday they bring you

The State
House in New Haven brings you avant-garde rock on Wednesday with Horse Lords,
with Editrix and Wess Meets West. On Saturday the 80s/90s dance party returns
with Party Out Of Bounds – Cure Night and on Monday it's open mic night hosted

Back in
Hartford, The Monday Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park continues tonight,
featuring The Matt Chasen Generation Ensemble & Antonio Hart. The
Connecticut Historical Society journeys explores the underground railroad with
Family Adventure Days: Escape to Freedom Tuesday and Thursday. The Audio Feed
series at Constitution Plaza features Seth Adam on Wednesday at noon. The Pratt
Street Lunchtime Music series continues on Thursday at noon with Canyon, and it’s
Off the Record Indie Night at Little River Restoratives later that night. The
Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open Friday and The Taste of the Caribbean &
Jerk Festival will be held Saturday with food, music, and more at Mortensen
Riverfront Plaza. On Sunday, it's the Taste of Hartford and Sea Tea
Improv's all-ages comedy show. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided
meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check their website

Presents has The Flaming Lips and Particle Kid at the College Street Music Hall

holding a Crystal Lake hike and picnic. The Black Rock Funk All-stars perform
at La Boca resturant Saturday night.

At Infinity Hall Hartford you can hear electronica, jam, and soul
on Wednesday with Litz for free. On Friday, the Carpenters are remembered with

Now here's a rundown of cinema
off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways is
still running “Pavarotti,” a documentary about the Voice, the Man, the Legend,
and “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” a documentary about the iconic author.
Also continuing is “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” an ode to friendship
and family, and "Rojo,” an Argentinian crime thriller. On Thursday, they
have a one-day screening of "Eye on Video: 2019 Film Showcase," a
presentation of the work of 15 high schoolers from the Greater Hartford area
who created original short films in just six weeks. On Friday, they open "Tel
Aviv on Fire," about a intern on a Palestinian soap opera. Details and

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in
Hartford continues its tribute to Stanley Kubrick with "Spartacus"
tonight and Tuesday, "Paths of Glory" on Wednesday and Thursday,

Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.
From 6-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael
Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along
with occasional live interviews.
At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the
Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul,
jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.
At 9:30 pm, Jack Sullivan brings you
Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live
requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.
From 11-12:30 am, it’s Hits of the 60s
and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug
on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.
From 12:30-1:30 am, Matt the Cat keeps
the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.
Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers
a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of
radio.
At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald
takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from
far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.
From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a
rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.
Finally, rounding out the night from
4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we
kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
