Monday 7-8-2019 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, July 8th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Anything Goes Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude hosted by Ashley Hamel. The Hearing Voices Network, hosted by Jessica Miller, meets on Friday at 12:30 pm, and in the evening, you can enjoy progressive rock by After the Fall with their latest release, Early Light. Teen Visual Art Camp happens Saturday morning, focused on exploring new visual creations, and in the evening, Lara Herscovitch & The Highway Philosophers take the stage with blues, pop, jazz, and more. Enjoy the retrospective of Barbara Newton Hahn’s oil-on-canvas works all month, and on Monday the Buttonwood co-sponsors a DIY framing class at 1 pm at Middletown Framing on Main St..

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Mondays brings you Ports of Spain, Holy Tunics, and Shy. On Wednesday it’s another Comedy Open Mic with Dan Rice. You can catch Brook Pridemore, Kevil Gaffey, Pat Dalton, and more on Thursday.  Friday’s Happy Hour features Lynn Malavolte, followed by the late show with Wise Old Moon, The Wolff Sisters, and Chris Ross and The North. Saturday’s Jazz Jam session is with Gary Grippo & Friends, and in the evening they headline Rockaway Bitch, appearing with The Redactions. The Sunday Matinée features Mario Pavone and the New American Songbook Sextet, followed by a blues jam in the evening with the George Lesiw Band. http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Jazz Mondays features the Jovan Alexandre Quartet this week, and Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s Community Blues Jam brings Peter Bryon to the stage, and Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday. On Friday they bring you Vitamin B-e with the mighty Hammond instrument, and it’s Chris “Bad News” Barnes on Saturday with Hokum Blues. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The State House in New Haven hosts an original songwriters open mic session tonight at 7 pm. On Tuesday, they bring you Yanga, along with Fernadito Ferrer from the Afro-Latin independent music movement on the West Coast. Southpaw holds another Bat Soup Comedy Night Thursday, and on Friday, you can catch Nicole Dollanganger, Crag Mask, Space Camp, and Reduction Plan. Multi-instrumentalist Trey Moore performs on Saturday, along with June Jissle, Tekowa Lakica, and IkeGotJuice.  www.statehousepresents.com

Back in Hartford, The Monday Night Jazz series in Bushnell Park opens tonight at 6 with the Jovan Alexandre Quartet, Dezron Douglas, and the Black Lion Quartet. The Connecticut Historical Society offers Comics and Capes, a family adventure in comic books, on Tuesday and Thursday morning, or you can take the annual garden tour at Elizabeth Park. Riverfront Recapture offers a free fitness class at Mortensen Riverfront Plaza Tuesday evenings through August. The Hartford Public Library presents “Coated: 1944 Hartford Circus Fire Project,” with an expert panel and discussion on Tuesday at 5:30 pm. The Cirque du Soleil performances of “Luzia” continue Tuesday through Sunday at the Big Top. The Audio Feed series at Constitution Plaza sponsors Ashley Hamel Wednesday at noon. The Elizabeth Park summer concert series continues Wednesday with a performance by Latanya Farrell at 6:30 pm, and it’s karaoke night at The Russell on Pratt St. The Riverfront Food Truck Festival happens Thursday through Saturday from 11 am until 8 pm at Riverfront Plaza. The Pratt Street Lunchtime Music Series continues on Thursday at noon, featuring Heather McLarney. The Sunset Sounds Concert Series at the Butler McCook House and Garden continues Thursday evening with the Louis Hayes Trio. The Bushnell Park Beer Garden is open from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, and Pratt Street sponsors a salsa sin the evening as well. It’s Second Saturdays for Families this week at the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Riverfront Fireworks happen on Saturday evening on the Plaza. The Hartford Mindfulness Center holds guided meditations every Monday at noon on Constitution Plaza, and check the website for free yoga and fitness classes, including some that are bilingual. The Russell Library in Middletown reminds you to take part in the Adult Summer Reading program to win a Downtown Middletown gift with the next drawing on July 15th. Tonight, at 6:30 pm, the Middletown Public Works and State DEEP present “What’s In, What’s Out,” with the latest in recycling news. On Tuesday evening the Job and Career Center sponsors Diane Lang with the workshop, “How to Deal with Change and Triumph Over Loss.” And the Russell Readers discuss “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. The Job Center holds an information session on census employment Wednesday at 4 pm, and Scrabble happens at 5 pm. There’s an Introduction to Computers Workshop on Thursday at 2 pm, and the Start a Life Discoveries summer program for kids begins on Saturday morning. Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall tomorrow with Speedy Ortiz. They move on to the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday to bring you Stef Chura, French Vanilla, and Steve Hartlett. On Sunday, Low Cut Connie and Jelani Sei take the Ballroom stage. www.manicpresents.com

Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts invites you to learn about digital design with Professor Christopher Chenier Tuesday at noon at the Ring Family Performing Arts Hall. Infinity Hall in Norfolk invites you to a free performance by the Heather Gillis Band on Wednesday, and on Friday they feature the comedy of Paula Poundstone. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office reminds you that the Music at the Mansion series continues this Wednesday at the Wadsworth Mansion with a performance by the Hartford Jazz Orchestra. Bring your own picnic meal or sample the food trucks. The Middletown Stage Company holds a dinner dance and silent auction Saturday at Cantina Café Ristorante. The Shoreline Arts Alliance holds a Woodstock @50 Celebration Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm at Bishop’s Orchards Farm Market in Guilford. Enjoy music, arts and crafts, food, family fun, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways is still running “Pavarotti,” a documentary about The Voice, The Man, The Legend, and continues “Echo in the Canyon,” a documentary about the Laurel Canyon music scene of the mid-60’s. Both run through Thursday. On Friday they open “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am,” a documentary about the writer featuring peers, critics, and colleagues, and “Wild Rose,” a British musical drama about chasing stardom. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music,” the uncut director’s version, through Wednesday. It’s Out Film CT Queer Thursdays this week, and they’re screening “Just Friends.” On Friday they open “The Souvenir,” a mystery that takes place during the Thatcher years in Britain, and the Sunday National Theatre Live matinée is a performance of “Hamlet” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:

Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-8pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8pm until 9:30, Chip Austin is in the air chair for Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including folk, acoustic country and roots-rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

At 9:30pm, Jack Sullivan brings you Cruiser’s Radio Program. Music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

From 11-12:30am, it’s Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z, playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Win a WESU beverage mug on his weekly "Name That Tune" contest.

From 12:30-1:30am, Matt the Cat keeps the oldies spotlight going on Juke in the Back from Pacifica.

Next up at 1:30, Nutmeg Junction offers a new original-scripted audio theater program celebrating the golden age of radio.

At 2 am, Roots World with Cliff Furnald takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

From 3-4, am stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
